3Bowman, Kathy, E-mail from Kathy Bowman - 2009-08-18 (E-mail), 18 Aug 2009, Shon R. Edwards, 1039 N 2575 W, Layton, UT 84041-7709, U.S.A. "Hi, Shon!  Thanks for answering so quickly!

I really haven't got any Gillam information that is currently part of my family tree.  An Elizabeth Gillam, born about 1785 (no place of birth given), married Samuel Lee, who was born about 1778 in Orange Co, North Carolina. Some data is available further back for Samuel, but the ONLY other piece of information on Elizabeth was that her father's name was John (which may or may not be correct, since no other information on him is included).

I found the will for William Gillam that I copied below by searching for this couple in North Carolina databases, and got really excited when I learned that Chatham County was created from Orange County -- they are right next to each other.

The Gillam family is hard to pin down is some respects.  The name is spelled Gillam, Gilham, Gillham, Gilliam, Gillum, etc. The "X" at the end of the will shows that William himself was probably illiterate, and the two men who signed the will were witnessing that he made his "mark" instead of a signature.  So who knows how it was actually spelled!

Here's a brief outline of the family that I took from the will.  (I really couldn't make an exact match to your gedcom; but by starting at Thomas Gillham (#179) and working down, there seems to be enough similarities to keep looking!)

William Gillam
Wife:     Jane
Sons:    Thomas (given 5 schillings)
John     (inherits property that was already divided for him and is co-executor of the will)
William  (will inherit the rest of the property that his mother is given until her death; may be single??)
Married Daughters: Mary Stephens
                         Elizabeth Lee
                         Sarah Green
                         Marjory Lewis
                         Susanah Buckner
Single Daughters:  (still living at home) Peggy and Rebecca Gillam

The William in your gedcom (#190) has a marriage date of 1782 in North Carolina; that's the strongest link I could find in your data to the will. He also has a brother John (#191) with a daughter named Elizabeth, which was of interest to me.  When I clicked on their individual files in the gedcom, I was able to access their sources in your file referencing Mary A. Old, from British Columbia, Canada, who seems to have done a lot with the Gillam family.  Do you have any connections with her?  She may be able to provide some additional details if you send her a copy of this will written in 1821.

One of the men who signed the will was Samuel Lee.  He is also mentioned in the will as living on an adjacent property. So it seems plausible that the Elizabeth LEE listed as William's daughter was married to this Samuel (or possibly a son/nephew/etc with the same name?).  The question I'm working on now is whether this couple could be the couple I am looking for.  The names match; the location is at least close; so I couldn't help but think I'd found something worth pursuing!  The trick now will be looking at vital records and census records to see if there is a valid link.

Genealogy is like a detective story!  You find one fact and then guess where you need to look for the next clue.  Keep me in mind if you find any more connections.  I'll do the same!  Good luck!

Kathy

Will of William Gillam

Whereas I, William Gillam of the County of Chatham, and state of North Carolina, being of a sound mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of time, and the necessity of settling my outward affairs, doth make and ordain this my last will and testament, revoking all others heretofore made by me.  Item 1st, it is my will and desire that all my just debts be paid as soon after my death as they conveniently can by my Executors, and if there should not be money sufficient on hand ast such time to discharge the same, that they dispose of such part of the perishable property and in such manner as they may think best to raise the money.  Item 2nd, I give and bequeath unto my loving wife, Jane, for her support during her natural life, a part of the tract of land whereon I now live, bounded as follows, beginning at a white oak near the mouth of the lane betwixt Samuel Lee’s land and my own, running thence with the lane west, nearly opposite the barn, then with said Lee’s line and Benjamin Curl’s line as their courses run, until it strikes the partition fences which includes the pasture field, known by the name of the barn field, thence to run with said partition fence until it strikes the fence near the head of the meadow, thence down the meadow fence as far as to stroke the partition fence betwixt what is called the upper meadow and lower meadow, thence northwardly in such a degree as will include the dwelling and other necessary houses, until it strikes the fence above the house, thence with the fence leading to the first station, with privilege of cutting firewood, and also rail timber sufficient to keep a good fence around the above bounded enclosures off the other part of the tract above mentioned.  I also give and bequeath to my wife, two cows her choice; six sheep her choice; three beds, one horse her choice; together with all the household and kitchen furniture, to dispose of as she may think best.  Item 3rd, I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Gillam, five schillings.  Item 4th, I give and bequeath unto my son John, the tract of land whereon he now lives, bounded as follows, beginning at William McPherson’s southwest corner, thence running south of west to a maple marked in the glade above the house, thence a due west until it strikes John Braxton’s line, thence bounded by the said Braxton, Clabourne, Guthrie’s and William McPherson’s lands, be the same more or less.  It is my will that he have it and hold for his own proper use forever.  Item 5th, I give and bequeath unto my son William Gillam, that part of land whereon I now live, not heretofore devised at my death, and also the land which is bequeathed to his mother at her death, together with all the stock of every kind, farming utensils and property of every kind that is not heretofore bequeathed nor may hereafter be bequeathed and disposed of by my Executors, to discharge the money, legacies and debts.  And it is my will that he hold the land and property herein bequeathed to him forever.  Item 6th, I give and bequeath to each of my following daughters, to wit, Mary Stephens, Elizabeth Lee, Sarah Green, Marjory Lewis, and Susanah Buckner, the sum of five schillings, to be paid them by my Executors.  Item 7th, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Peggy Gillam, one cow, her choice, after her mother’s choice, one bed and furniture, which she now claims. Item 8th , I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca Gillam, one cow, her choice, after her mother’s and Peggy’s choice, and one bed and furniture, which she now claims.  And lastly, I appoint my worthy friend, John Braxton, and my son John, my Executors of this my last will and testament.  In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my nad and seal this 9th day of May eighteen hundred and twenty one.
