Ord  IGI ref is:  447879:film.  SP says pre-1970.  Is it possible he did not actually get sealed to his parents?  Did work get done by someone knowing the names of parents?

NOTE:  This page should contain characaters both from Nordic and Eastern European codepages, and so each time you save the note in one, it will wipe out the other.  When PAF 5.0 comes out, fix this page, so that both will work.

LOG/NOTES:
-- Check for Rossow in Norwegian 1801 census index.  See if Petter has more kids - 1996?
-- Checked 1801 census (fore- and efternavnsregister) for Nedenes Amt (Aust-Agder county), but found nothing (FHL 6200977, 80) - 17 Sep 2000.
-- CHECK FOR A PASSPORT FROM GERMANY (PRUSSIA) - 1996?
-- Checked in the FHLC.  Found nothing - 25 Aug 1998.
-- Found the following exciting news today, from "Slekten Busch i Rostock, Risør og Oslo," by Anthon Busch, published by Leif Rødsten Trykkeri, Oslo, 1976:  "Men i alle fall kom han til Risør før 3/8 1797 [3 Aug 1797], da passprotokollene for Risør begynner," p. 53.  So we do know for sure that passport records existed at that time.  Hopefully, though, he arrived after this date; he only married a few months later, so it's possible he arrived even earlier.  A Norwegian archive would have to be checked for passport records, possibly a district archive for Aust-Agder (formerly Nedanes Amt) - 16 Sep 2000.
-- See if other Rossows in the world in the IGI.  Could it be Rousseaux?  A French guy?  Or British? Actually, not likely, because of his forenames:  Peter Konrad (which one would expect to find in Germany, but not necessarily Scandinavia, Britain, or France (unless a French/German border area) the
-- Also, there is no farm name or Rossow in Norway by this name (or variation thereof), so it doesn't appear he took a Norwegian farm name as his surname. He apparently doesn't pass his name on to his son, like many with farm names do, so this might further weaken the possibility of him being Scandinavian - 23 Jan 1998.
other countries) - 23 Jan 1998.
-- Checked IGI on Conrad, which is not a Scandinavian name, and isn't really found much in the IGI for Scandinavia at all, although extremely common in Germany - 23 Aug 1998.
-- NEW NOTE:  Have since done a name frequency check for the name in the IGI. Found it in Pommern (and also Brandenburg), Prussia, Germany (now much of which is in Poland, as well as Königsberg (now Russia)).  This was the only place I found the name in the world (except for a few in England and a few in the United States:  In US, the only occurrence of this name is in IL, WI, MN, all also heavily German settled; also, NY, but accompanied by other German names in the family.  No other places in the world but England (only 5 or 6 occurrences in whole IGI for British Isles, all of which likely may come from French.).  Another version of the same name was Rosowski.  Doing the frequency search, it seems that those who were Rossow's (from Rossów or Rossowski?) were mainly in the present-day German areas of Brandenburg/Pommern, and those who were Rossowski's were in the present-day Polish areas - 23 Aug 1998.
-- The overwhelming probability is that he is German (of Polish descent, since his surname is Slavic) originating from Pommern or Brandenburg, and that he migrated to Norway.  He didn't pass his surname on to his children, but rather his patronimic, which fit the Norwegian system. The present-day jurisdictions that we would look under would be Mecklenburg? for Germany and Szczecin, Koszalin, (wojewódstwo between K. & G.) Gdansk, Eblag, (Pry? woj.), Suwalki, etc. for Poland (even the part of Russia that used to be part of this German area, Königsberg) - Sep 1998.
-- Check the following family histories to see if can find something on German-sounding families from Risør:  929.2481 A1 #84 or 89.  Also, 929,2481 D or P 911v or n - 17 Sep 2000.
-- More ideas from Ruth at FHL: Find engagement; this usually has more information than a marriage record.  Also, find birth of Alf and marriage to find his occupation - 17 Sep 2000.
-- Checked engagement, 16 Jan 1798 in Risør (not Søndeled portion of records) parish, found.  It showed nothing.  It stated only that Peter Konrad ROSSÓW was engaged to Margrethe ALVSEN on that date, and the priest's name - 17 Sep 2000.
-- Check his child's confirmation, on FHL 123565 Kl. b. 4, Konfirmerte 1797-1815 - 17 Sep 2000.
