“Wellington, 27th Feb. 1848.
“DEAR FATHER AND MOTHER, -- I received yours, I think, in December 1847, and was equally happy with you to think that you had received a letter from us at last. I am glad to hear of all being well, as this leaves us at present. I have been in Wellington for the last eight months; my family being still at nelson. When I left Nelson things were rather dull, and knowing there was a demand for carpenters in Wellington, the barracks and other buildings being going on, I came here. The first month I worked on the new stone-built barracks at Porirua, about eighteen miles from Wellington; and since then at Wellington, where I have been principally employed on the barracks and other Government buildings. There is likely to be a great deal of work here; I have got the promise of twelve months work. My employer is the principal contractor here, and I say with pleasure, that I never was more comfortably employed in my life. Wages are 6s.6d. per day, and hours of labour from eight till five. We are generally paid by the month. The only unpleasantness is being separated from my family; I frequently hear from them; they were all well about a week ago. I am so partial to Nelson that I should be loath to leave it for good, which I do not consider I have done as long as my family are there. Although at present there is a great outlay by Government on barracks, &c. in Wellington, yet, in my opinion, when these works are completed, Nelson will be a better place for a man with a family; for no man ought to be without a piece of land to cultivate, and about Wellington there is none to be had. There are two flats of land which form the principal part of the town, and at such a rent that a poor man stands little chance. It is quite different at Nelson; the Company's town acres are let for £1 per year, and the acre I occupy belongs to an absentee. You will see the advantages I derive from an acre of ground, and that principally worked by my family, when mention that they have got from half an acre about twenty bushels of wheat, the other half being occupied with potatoes and other vegetables. When I fist took that acre it was so thick with timber that it was difficult to find a way through it: many a wet shirt I had with felling trees and grubbing the ground by moonlight.
If I can be spared a short time, I think of going to Nelson to see my family. This is allowed to be one of the finest climates in the world, especially for children. Thank God, we all enjoy good health; as for myself, I do not know that I was ever better in my life; I can do a day's work with more ease than ever I did; I eat hearty, sleep soundly, and am getting quite fat. I hope this will find you in as good health and spirits. I am fully aware of the anxiety of K-at not hearing from us. B-depended upon me writing and I upon him, so between us we both neglected writing. You will oblige me by letting K-know that B-and I are working together; and we rent a little house between us. B-left Nelson to go to Auckland, but the ship putting in here, and trade being busy, he made up his mind to stop a while. His wife has since left Nelson and gone to Auckland, on account of their two daughters being in situations there. B-talks of writing by this ship, as he has not written yet. There is a most particular friend of mine who I should be proud to hear from (it is j. L--), as I should like to hear from some of my old shopmates how they are getting on; and you can tell them I never regretted leaving England. I should advise no one; but any man, if he knew the advantages of New Zealand, would not stop in England, for there is none of that tyranny and oppression here that is practiced in the different employments in England. You will oblige me by writing by return; and you may direct to me at Wellington. - I remain, your affectionate son,
JOHN EDWARDS”." J. L-- is possibly John? Little, mentioned in another letter. Image.4Edwards, John Sr., Letter from John Edwards Sr. to J. Little, 18 Apr. 1849 (Wellington, 18 Apr 1849), Shon R. Edwards, 1039 N 2575 W, Layton, UT 84041-7709, U.S.A. "Wellington
Letter from a Settler
Wellington, April 18th, 1849.
Dear Little,
I received yours, dated October 1848. I can assure you your letter gave me great pleasure: for I was many a time thinking that all chance of hearing from you was gone. It is with pleasure that I inform you that myself and family are in good health; I was never better able to do a day's work in my life than I am since I came to this country. I cannot speak too highly of the climate, and particularly of Nelson. I do not think I should have lived till this time had I remained in England, for I was very far from being well when I left. I have had reason to be thankful for leaving, and more particularly as the times have turned out so bad in England. If I had an offer of constant employment and a free passage to England, I would not accept it at present or at any other time, so long as I am able to live in this country. There is no comparison between this country and England; as regards employers and employed, we are more on an equality, with none of the tyranny practiced amongst you poor slaves. I have worked for the same employer ever since I have been in Wellington : he is a countryman of yours, from Greenock, of the name of Wilson, and is a very nice man. Our principal employment has been under Government, building barracks, &c. I have at present about 600 feet of sashes and frames quite plain at 1s.6d. per foot, and I calculate on making 3l. per week without much trouble: they are of Sydney cedar, and would be jumped at with you at 6d. per foot. When on day-work, one pay is 6s.6d. per eight hours, from eight to five; and no getting out of bed on cold frosty mornings like you poor fellows. O often think of the contrast. We see very little difference between summer and winter, compared to what it is in England: they days are a little shorter in summer and a little longer in winter, at which season we can see in the shop until five o'clock. We never have any snow on the flat land or in the valleys, though it is to be seen on the lofty mountains all the year round; but we sometimes have showers of hail. The most serious calamity that has visited us has been some severe shocks of earthquake; there was scarcely a brick building but was more or less injured.
B- has gone to Auckland; he left Nelson since I did, and worked with us about ten months. My employer has sent for him back, but I do not expect he will come, as there is plenty doing in Auckland, and his family are gone, and intend to settle there. I understand there is abundance of work in Auckland at 8s. per day, but they work ten hours per day. I experienced but poor times in Nelson for some time after the New Zealand Company stopped the works. I, along with several others of various trades, some tailors, shoemakers, ribbon and silk weavers, with picks, spades &c. making roads, digging ditches through swamps, &c. We had so many yards of ditching for a week's work, for which at one time we were paid 1£, afterwards 18s. The lot went to work on Monday mornings, having to walk about eight miles. We went to it in good earnest, and by Tuesday night we used to finish our week's work, after which we had the rest of the week to ourselves. I took an acre of land in the bush, full of pine and other trees. I gave so many to the sawyers, and had so many myself, out of every thousand feet, by which means I got sufficient boards, &c. to put up a house; and when there was nothing else to do, along with my wife and Johnny, used to fell trees, cross-cut them into lengths, and sell them for firewood, as there was always a good demand. I used to get 3s. a bullock-dray-full. I have been twice in the bush, sawing in the pit, ready in a time of need to do anything; but thank goodness! Times are better now.
For want of space, I must conclude with my respects to all. Please to write again soon. I many a time think of us trudging through the streets of old Brum., and taking our cup of ale. I should like a cup of the Dog-and-Duck parlour ale now. My wife joins in respects to Mrs. Little. Remember me to all inquiring friends. - Affectionately yours.

Biography
William was born in 1841.[1] He was the son of John Grey and Sarah Salmon. He was christened at Corston on 29 May 1842.
It is likely William arrived in Wellington, New Zealand on the Hastings early in 1858. His uncle, George Green Buck and maternal aunt, Mary Ann, returned from a visit to England on this voyage.[2] William married Isabella Burnett in 1863.[3] A daughter, Alice, was born later that year.[4]
The headstone of William's parents in the Saltford Cemetery near Bath, England[5] states that William was drowned in Wellington on 14? August 1867. A search of newspaper records shows that a Thomas Gray was drowned about that time in the Ruamahanga River in the Wairarapa.[6][7] (This is just across the Remutaka Ranges from Taita where the Bucks had been living.) NZBDM does not show a death for William Grey/Gray or Thomas Grey/Gray near this time. After his death, a posthumous son, William Albert John was born to Isabella.[8][9]

8Multiple, Wikipedia, Shon R. Edwards, 1039 N 2575 W, Layton, UT 84041-7709, U.S.A. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page is URL. "A maid, or housemaid or maidservant, is a female domestic worker. Although now usually found only in the wealthiest households, in the Victorian era domestic service was the second largest category of employment in England and Wales, after agricultural work.[1]
In Victorian England, all middle-class families would have "help", but for most small households, this would be only one employee, the maid of all work, often known colloquially as "the girl".
Types
George Clive and his family with an Indian maid, painted 1765. As she appears to be caring for the child, she may be an ayah.
Maids traditionally have a fixed position in the hierarchy of the large households, and although there is overlap between definitions (dependent on the size of the household) the positions themselves would typically be rigidly adhered to. The usual classifications of maid in a large household are:
Lady's maid: a senior servant who reported directly to the lady of the house, but ranked beneath the Housekeeper, and accompanied her lady on travel. She took care of her mistress's clothes and hair, and sometimes served as confidante.
House-maid or housemaid: a generic term for maids whose function was chiefly "above stairs", and were usually a little older, and better paid. Where a household included multiple housemaids the roles were often sub-divided as below.
Head house-maid: the senior house maid, reporting to the Housekeeper. (Also called "House parlour maid" in an establishment with only one or two upstairs maids).
Parlour maid: they cleaned and tidied reception rooms and living areas by morning, and often served refreshments at afternoon tea, and sometimes also dinner. They tidied studies and libraries, and (with footmen) answered bells calling for service.[7]
Chamber maid: they cleaned and maintained the bedrooms, ensured fires were lit in fireplaces, and supplied hot water.
Laundry maid: they maintained bedding and towels. They also washed, dried, and ironed clothes for the whole household, including the servants.
Under house parlour maid: the general deputy to the house parlour maid in a small establishment which had only two upstairs maids.
Nursery maid: also an "upstairs maid", but one who worked in the children's nursery, maintaining fires, cleanliness, and good order. Reported to the Nanny rather than the Housekeeper.
Kitchen maid: a "below stairs" maid who reported to the Cook, and assisted in running the kitchens.
Head kitchen maid: where multiple kitchen maids were employed, the "head kitchen maid" was effectively a deputy to the cook, engaged largely in the plainer and simpler cooking (sometimes cooking the servants' meals).
Under kitchen maid: where multiple kitchen maids were employed these were the staff who prepared vegetables, peeled potatoes, and assisted in presentation of finished cooking for serving.
Scullery maid: the lowest grade of "below stairs" maid, reporting to the cook, the scullery maids were responsible for washing cutlery, crockery, and glassware, and scrubbing kitchen floors, as well as monitoring ovens while kitchen maids ate their own supper.[8]
Between maid: roughly equivalent in status to scullery maids, and often paid less, the between maids in a large household waited on the senior servants (butler, housekeeper, and cook) and were therefore answerable to all three department heads, often leading to friction in their employment.[9] Sometimes known by the name 'tweeny'.
Still room maid: a junior maid employed in the still room; as the work involved the supply of alcohol, cosmetics, medicines, and cooking ingredients across all departments of the house, the still room maids were part of the "between staff", jointly answerable to all three department heads." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maid#:~:text=Parlour%20maid%3A%20they%20cleaned%20and,answered%20bells%20calling%20for%20service.

Thanks for your emails, we have been watching the live coverage from New York and Washington, it's been on T.V. continuous over the last 30 or so hours and is just unbelievable. We can only hope that something like this never happens again.
Just been going through my notes and thought some of this maybe helpful to you. These are some stories passed down by Auntie Hilda (Franklin - Alice and Ina's sister) - I quote:-
We know Hermione married beneath her, she had something to do with the Danish royal court. Gunder Gundersen was to be made the Danish equivalent to an English baron. He refused the title and emigrated with his little family to get away from protocol etc. He didn't like the way the ordinary people were treated. There is a story that Agnes Marie was born in the bed that Queen Victoria slept in when she visited Denmark. Uncle George (Franklin) thought Gunder was an agricultural pharmacist in Denmark and also worked somewhere in the palace (may have been the case, for him to have met Hermione).
When they left Denmark, the Gundersens and Johanne Bahn went to England and lived in London for a year, this allowed Gunder to learn the English language and learn their customs. They arrived in Lyttleton, Christchurch, South Island, and while there Gunder was approached by either government or immigration officials and was asked to go to Mauriceville, in the Wairarapa where there were a number of Danish and Norwegian settlers. They needed an interpreter, as neither could speak the others language and Gunder understood all of them. He agreed to go and left his wife, children and sister in law in Christchurch until such time as he could send for them. The family started a laundry business there, whilst they waited for news that they could rejoin Gunder.
Gunder and Hermione did not wish anyone to know their origins as they felt it would have created a barrier between them and other settlers. They said the past was past, and they had left it all behind them, Granny Franklin (Agnes Marie Gundersen) said the same thing. The fact that they were educated could have created a barrier, however anyone with an education was useful to the community as it was essential to have someone to deal with the local administration.
Gunder would write letters home for those settlers who could not read or write and read replies to them.
Agnes Marie ran the store and post office from her home (that little cottage I sent you a photo of, and raised 12 kids there !) after her husband, George Reuben Franklin, died of diabetes in 1901. She was also a midwife, often having her patients stay with her in her own home. She smoked and cured her own ham and bacon, and also for some of the Danish farmers and they gave her joints of meat for herself and family. She had a small orchard, bottled and pickled her own fruit and vegetables as well as making jam etc. She starched the stiff collars of the best shirts for some of the men who worked at the timber mill. She also found time to crotchet and sew for her large family. The kids had to do most of the housework while Agnes was busy. Hilda says there was one time in her early teens when she was taking the outgoing mail to the train and collecting the incoming mail. There were Maoris standing on the platform and she was very scared of Maoris because she had listened to stories of the recent Maori wars. No way was she going to meet the train. That was one day the mail was missed.
Agnes Franklins home in Kopuaranga (the photo) was burnt down while she was away - the fire was caused by a hole in the chimney which was never repaired. Auntie Nell ( Ellen) and her husband Charles Wright were living there at the time. Upstairs in the " dark room" were all Agnes's papers, so goodness knows what stories went up in smoke.
Hopefully, this is of interest to you, have you got Auntie Ruby's notes on the early days of Mary Anne Hurren ? I'll send them if you haven't. Think thats about all for now - it's a beautiful day here today, so I'm off outside to clear up branches etc of the pine trees we've had cut down.
Look forward to hearing from you.

2Deseret News, Obituary of Mary Ann Merrill (Published by Deseret News 12 Dec 1903.), 1903, Robert Grow. "Death of Mrs. Pratt
Early Settler and Faithful Church Worker Passes Away
Mrs. Mary Ann M. Pratt, widow of the late Apostle Orson Pratt, and a resident of this city for the past 52 years answered the final summons at 6:15 this morning, at the ripe age of 84 years and six months. Two years ago Mrs. Pratt fell and broke her right arm between the elbow and the hand and a day or two ago she broke the same member between the elbow and shoulder, which injuries caused her great pain and were no doubt the means of hastening the end.
The deceased was born June 2, 1819, at Southhold, Long Island, and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in an early day, later becoming acquainted with and marrying Elder Orson Pratt, the ceremony being performed in the Nauvoo Temple. At the time of her conversion she was living in South Norwalk, Conn., but gradually moved westward and came to Utah in 1851, where she has been a resident ever since.
Mrs. Pratt was an active Church worker and was a frequent contributor to the columns of the Woman’s Exponent, a paper published in the interest of the Relief society. She leaves four children, they being Milando, her oldest son; Mrs. Vianna Eldredge, wife of Joseph U. Eldredge, Sr.; Mrs. Lathilla Kimball, wife of Joseph Kimball, and Prof. Valton M. Pratt; also numerous grandchildren and several great grandchildren. An only brother in the person of Capt. Henry B. Merrill, lives in Connecticut.
The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, Milando Pratt, 565 South State street, on Monday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. Friends are invited.".

Edwards, 1039 N 2575 W, Layton, UT 84041-7709, U.S.A. Obituary: Silver Cliff Rustler, Wed. Sept. 29, 1897, v. 25, no. 4. Moses Moore. Died: -- At the Moore ranch near Rosita, on Sunday, Sept. 26th, Moses Moore, Sr. aged 75.
Mr. Moore was born at Bishop's Auckland, county of Durham,Englan. He went to Scotland, where his children were born in 1850. He came to this part of Colorado in 1880 and settled at Rosita where he and a part of the family have since resided. Mr. Moore although having been a sufferer for years from a paralytic affliction, appeared bright as usual and th end of life was unlooked for. The family had just finished their dinner, and Mrs. Moore, wife of Moses Moore Jr. called her husband's attention to his father who was seemingly overcome with a severe spell of hicough which in a very fiew moments took his breath completely from him, thus strangling him. He died in his son's arms.
Mr. Moore leaves a wife and five children, three sons -- Robert in Pennsylvania, Harry, a musician of note, at Tyler, Texas, and Moses and two daughters. Mrs. J.A. McKinnon, and Mrs. L. H. Abbott -- to mourn his departure, the last three named being residents of this county. The Rustler's deepest sympathies are extended to the sorrowing ones.
The funeral took place at the Rosita cemetery Monday afternoon, the 27th at 4 p.m. and was well attended, the services being conducted by Rev. L.W.
