[Parents]

-- His signature on his marriage record in Wales and his will in New Zealand seem to match about 85-90%!  So this trick came off well.  Also, the Jones family next to the Edwards's on the boat were the very same family in Bedwellty, Monmouth, Cymru.  Notes I took of John Edwards who married Mary Jones in Wales from 1831-1834 20 years ago can be found below.  One of them, married in 1831 just happened to be in Bedwellty, same parish as the supposed brother of Mary Jones.  Pretty much already nailed, SRE, 9 Mar 2018.

-- Good web pages, which talk about Nelson, New Zealand; and a passenger list of the Olympus that the Edwards (and Jones) family(ies) came over on are:  http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ourstuff/genealogy/Olympus42.htm, SRE, 18 Aug 2009.

-- Olympus manifest taken into alphabetical order and out of original order (in the original provenance (order) the Jones family is right next to the Edwards family and I think is a brother to Mary Jones, wife of John Edwards Sr.:

-- IF YOU FIND A JOHN EDWARDS MARRRYING A MARY JONES AND THEN A JANE EDWARDS MARRIED ABOUT 1833 SOMEWHERE IN WALES EVENTUALLY, AND THEN A JANE EDWARDS BORN 3 FEB 1834 IN THE SAME PARISH, I'D SAY YOU HAVE THE RIGHT MARY JONES.  THIS IS PROBABLY THE BEST WAY TO APPROACH THIS FOR NOW -- WAIT FOR SOME BIRTH AND MARRIAGE INDEXES.  THIS IS A LONG SHOT, SINCE JANE WAS CHRISTENED IN ENGLAND, BUT SOMETIMES A CHRISTENING RECORD MIGHT OCCUR IN MULTIPLE PARISHES, SRE 3 OCT 2004.

Here are 3 more possibilities I checked the IGI for.  We've been told Jane Edwards was born in Wales and that John and Mary were married there, but what about border areas?  Might be worth checking signatures of John from these three records with the one from his will (unless it's a copy of a record, in which case this won't work), SRE 3 Oct 2004.

MORE IDEAS FROM BYU GENEALOGY CONFERENCE 5 Aug 2004:
-- Naming patterns:  Naming patterns in England:  If you have names like Zachariah and Jeremiah, they are unusual, religious, probably non-conformist.  Even Henry, David (common in Wales and Scotland, but not England), look at names of your known ancestors and compare them with all your possibles to narrow them down.  In England, the oldest son named for father’s father.  Naming patterns:  In Scotland, and perhaps some of England in the north affected by this, as well.  Very distinct naming patterns.  1st dau. named for father’s mother; 2nd dau. for mother’s mother; 3rd dau. for mother.

-- Proof of relationship of William and Mary Jones, also of our John Edwards' marriage to Mary Jones, therefore locality and family of Jones, i.e., Mary's actual (and therefore also William's) parents.  Found John Edwards family and William Jones family next to each other on the boat.  Then found both Edwards and Jones families in Bedwellty, most definitely Wm. Jones found on boat as in census in Bedwellty, Monmouth, Cymru.  This is cool and the proof and connection of Mary Jones to her family, SRE, 9 Mar 2018.

Trackwomen, 1943. Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company
A platelayer (British English), fettler (British English – UK, Australia, NZ) or trackman (American English) is a railway employee who inspects and maintains the permanent way of a railway, usually under the charge of a foreman called (in UK, Australia and NZ) the "ganger". The term "platelayer" derives from the plates used to build plateways, an early form of railway.[1]

What is a ganger? A supervisor, ganger or team leader is responsible for coordinating and supervising the work within their own 'gang' or work team for their specific area, section or region within the rail network.

Saltford railway station was a small station on the Great Western Main Line between Bath and Bristol in use between 1840 and 1970. It served the village of Saltford, Somerset. A local group is campaigning to have the station reopened.

History
The station was opened on 16 December 1840, four months after the Great Western Railway line opened between Bath and Bristol. The original timber building was destroyed by fire in August 1873; its replacement was constructed from stone.[1] A rival station had opened in 1869 at Kelston on the nearby Mangotsfield and Bath Branch Line of the Midland Railway. The bridge carrying that line across the river Avon also carried a footpath from Saltford.

Goods traffic was withdrawn from Saltford on 10 September 1959, however passenger services continued until 5 January 1970 when the station was closed.[1]

Proposals to reinstate Saltford station have not so far succeeded. Access to the old site from the A4 is awkward, but there are few other suitable sites in the village. The Saltford Environment Group is campaigning for the reopening of Saltford station. They hope to have the station reopened when the Great Western Main Line is electrified, including between Bath and Bristol Temple Meads.[2]

Description
The station was sited at the eastern end of the village at the foot of Saltford Hill, which is the present day A4 road between Bath and Bristol. The main building was on the down platform and there was also a small siding for goods. After the station closed the buildings and platforms were demolished.[1] Much of the main line through Saltford runs in a deep cutting or in tunnel.

The Victorian Maids
Victorian Maids: The concept of household maids is fairly common nowadays. But due to modernization, this culture has become quite different than what it used to be back in the United Kingdom during the Victorian Era. Housemaids used to be allocated different jobs by the mistresses.

Almost most certainly maids referred to female persons who were employed to perform domestic services.

The Victorian Maids
Though housemaids are now found only in the wealthiest of families, the concept of housemaids used to be very common during the Victorian Era, the service being the second largest category of employment in England and Wales.

The House Maids
The regular jobs of the Victorian households were accomplished by a number of different housemaids.

The Victorian Maids
The Victorian Maids
These included the parlor maid, the waitress, and the chambermaids. All these maids were allocated different jobs and were responsible for various jobs.

The Parlour Maid
The parlor maid was kept in the household mainly in place of the single footman. Thus the duties performed by the parlourmaid would be the same as his. The parlor maid would have various duties like opening the door to visitors and guiding them to the drawing room, setting the table for breakfast, luncheon or dinner, clearing them away, bringing the afternoon tea and similar details.

She would also be responsible for repairing the linen, wait on the mistress and address her when needed. She was also responsible for helping in making the bed, maintain the drawing room fireplace and put fresh curtains.

Victorian dairy maid
Duties Performed By Dairy Maids In Victorian Dairy Farms
The parlor maid would be wearing a print gown and simple cap in the morning. Her dress would change to a simple, black one, with white collars, cuffs, and cap in the afternoon. The parlor maid was supposed to work as noiselessly as possible. She was responsible for anticipating the movements of the diners at the table and handing them what they need.

The presence of a manservant in the room would mean that he would be the butler, while the maid would serve as the footman. When the dinner is over, the parkour maid would need to remove the items from the table, wash them and put them back in place.

The Chambermaid
The work of the chambermaid was supposed to start at six thirty. She would need to open the rooms and let the light flow in. Then she would need to sweep and dust the rooms and the halls. Then she would need to dust the hat, overcoat and other wearables needed by the master.

The chambermaid should also learn to take the clothes off the bed and air them properly, this being one of the important duties performed by her. The responsibility also extended to making the beds, opening the bedroom windows and turning the mattress to the air. She would also dust the furniture, woodwork and other objects around the house.

Duties Of The Victorian Dairy Maid

Thus the chambermaid was responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the house and maintain the hygiene of the household. If it was not possible to do all the job before luncheon, she would need to clean the silverware afterward.

The chambermaid was also expected to assist in the pantry if there were dinner parties at night. The chambermaid would draw the shades and light up the gas when dusk falls. She would also remove soiled towels and put fresh ones, tidy the washstand and see that drinking water is available in all the bedrooms.

The Second Chambermaid
The chambermaid might sometimes be overburdened with all the jobs assigned to her. That is why the second chambermaid would be found useful. She would be in charge of the bedrooms on the third floors, the halls there and the stairs.

The chambermaids would be responsible for cleaning any other rooms that are there on the floor. Her job was restricted to cleaning them early in the morning. The nurses would be responsible for keeping it in order for the rest of the day.

The Third Chambermaid
The third chambermaid would brush and dust the sewing room early in the morning so as not to disturb the lady’s maids during their work. She would be in charge of tidying the rooms of the servants, the bathrooms, and the stairs.

She would also make the beds of the men, the kitchen maids, the cooks and sweep and dust their rooms. She would also keep the servants’ hall in order and clean the silver for the table. She was also responsible for cleaning the dining hall.

The Waitress
The waitress has almost the same job as that of the butler. She would be in charge of the dining room and the pantry, clean the silver and take charge of the cooling and warming of the wines and serve the meals. She would also serve the refreshment required in the evening, carry coffee and dinner to the parlor.

She would always be in a black dress, white apron, and a cap before the lunch is served. She would answer the front door, taking turns with the parlor maid. She would fasten all the doors and windows at night and put out the gas and lamps. These were the housemaids in a typical household in the Victorian Era.

miles guildford surrey england to saltford somerset 106

-- in 2nd marriage, it states her father is John Ollis, which is probably a transcription error.  Her dad's name is John and hers is Ollis.  Or she reported her father's name as Ollis because she reported herself as a spinster!  She lists her father as a platelayer, which we know John Grey is, so this has to be it!  SRE, 29 Mar 2021.

Marriage Notes:

-- The most bizarre thing is that I have also found John Grey and Sarah Salmon, md exactly one month earlier, 22 Nov 1840, in  Lyncombe And Widcombe, Somerset, England!  Wonder what the significance is of this place and how close it is to Saltford, SRE, 04 Dec 2016.
-- Lyncome Hill and Widcombe Hill are two hills/roads in Bath city.  Not finding it as a town, SRE, 04 Dec 2016.

NOTES:
-- Got an e-mail from Pauline McIntosh 5 July 2004, which said the children of Benjamin and Sophia were:  Mary, Edith, and Lillie Ellen.  Is it possible that Hilda Elizabeth, Frederick, and Wallace were from Benjamin's other wife, Mary Ann Brennan?  Also, however, she mentiones in her first e-mail of 1 July 2004, that Benjamin and Sophia had eight children.  Follow up on this and see if it's possible to get other information, as she lists only three children in her second e-mail.  I'll include the e-mails here:

Dear Distant Relative,
I came across all your information by chance, when I was trying to find information about my great-grandfather Benjamin Franklin who was born in New Zealand. It was just wonderful. I am a decendant of Benjamin and Sophia Newham. Benjamin and Sophia had eight children. Your information on Sophia is not quiet correct. She was born in 1857 in Binalong New South Wales, Australia. She died 1893 - District Mount McDonald New South Wales, Australia.
Are you interested in any family information I have about Sophia and Benjamin's descendants?
Kind regards,
Pauline McIntosh

Dear Shon,
It was great to hear from you. I only started looking for my family history when I retired. I find it very fascinating and sad at the same time, sad because I find people that are my ancestors and I know very little about them.
Benjamin Franklin and Sophia Newham had the following children:-
Mary born 1877 known as Polly married McKenzie had at least one son
Edith born 1878 married Robert M Neville 1898 they had 9 children
Lillie Ellen born 1880 died 1916 married Albert Parkin 1902 at least one daughter
Clara Alice (my grandmother) born Mount McDonald (New South Wales, Australia) 5th October, 1882 -died Bathurst New South Wales 1966. she married Michael James Maloney in 1900 he was born Brown's Creek New South Wales 17th July 1876.
They had five children:
Oswald Augustus Maloney born Browns Creek 27th March 1902
Isabel Josephine born Peak Hill (N.S.W.) 20th March 1905 died 5th August 1952. buried Bathurst N.S.W. Married George Pigram (no children)
Dulcie Sophia born Canbelego (N.S.W.) 17th July 1907 died 14th April, 1997(Sydney N.S.W.) married Jack Boon they had four children

Raymond A born 1885 married Grace M Ferguson 1910 (3children)
Violet M born 1887 also married a Ferguson (no children) died 1951 she is buried in Bathurst Cemetery as Violet Franklin
Benjamin D born 1889 died 1891. My grandmother Clara told me that he fell in a well, great grandfather Benjamin tried in vane but could not revive him.
Clarence C born 1891 I don't think he married.
These towns and places mentioned are in the same locality of western New South Wales. I really need to visit some of the old cemeteries, if I can find them. United States is probably like Australia, places change over a hundred years.. The old graves may be deteriorated. I will keep in touch with new information I might find.
Kind regards,
Pauline

The following is an excerpt from New Zealand Shipwrecks: 1795-1960 by C.W.N. Irgram and P. O. Wheatley:
Phoenix- Schooner: The vessel sailed from Nelson for Wellington on November 21, 1846 with a complement of seven persons, including a Mr. Perry, a merchant, and was wrecked somewhere between Stephen and D'Urvill Islands, with the loss of all hands. The weather was very foggy at the time of the casualty, and the first intimation of the disaster was the finding of a paper parcel belonging to Mr. Perry, several other articles and the timbers of a vessel about the size of the Phoenix near Rangitoto. In August 1847 it was reported that the keel of a vessel of about 40 Feet in length was seen off Port Gore, and was thought to be a part of the hull of the Phoenix. The Phoenix, registered No. 5 of 1846 Port of Nelson, was a schooner of 37 tons register, built at Nelson in 1846 by Alexander Perry and her dimensions were length 48.8 feet, beam 13.6 feet, depth 7.7 feet. She was owned by Alexander Perry of Nelson, merchant and was commanded by Captain George Cooper.

Captain George Cooper was a former mate of the Fifeshire. The Captain of the Phoenix has left a wife and young family for whom a subscription will be opened at the custom house.

The following is a brief outline of the history of the Cooper-Hurren, Franklin-Hurren, Douglas-Hurren and Franklin-Gunderson families as told by Ruby Franklin:
In 1841 when the first settlers and surveyors were leaving England there was one man who cam out on either the Whitby or S. Fifeshire who perhaps had a considerable influence on the history of these people. His name was Richard Maund. But more about him later.
It was in the year 1842 on the 1st of February that the S Fifeshire arrived at Nelson, bringing out from England the main body of the first settlers to Nelson. After landing her passengers, she was trying to get out of the port, but was carried onto the rocks by the tide and fell broadside onto the arrow reef now know as Fifeshire Rock. She was wrecked on 27 February 1842.
Many of the people who traveled from England in the Fifeshire settled at Motueka and one will find in the English Church burial ground many graves of those original passengers of the Fifeshire. The font in use at St. Thomas' Anglican Church was made from the mast of this ship.
Mary Anne Hurren was a passenger on this ship and I believe, was born in Kent, England in the year 1824 according to what she had told me, Being 18 years of age at that time. She must have had her first birthday in New Zealand shortly after her arrival here as her birthday was on the 14th of February.
Shortly after arrival in Nelson, Marry Anne Hurren was married to George Cooper, who came out as mate on the S Fifeshire. They lived at first in Nelson in Have Road, I believe. George Cooper was later in 1846, Captain of the schooner Pheonix which was also built by him, and three others whose names are unknown to me although my cousin Mand Slatter thinks one of them was a Mr. Lightbrand.
The Phoenix sailed out on her maiden voyage, on November 21 1846 and was wrecked with seven persons on board. There was one passenger, a Mr. Perry of Nelson, who was also the owner of the boat. George Cooper, Captain of the boat, left a wife and two young daughters, Maria who later married Captain Robert McNabb and Francis who married George Boyce. A third child, another daughter, was not born until about 7 months after this sad happening. Her name was Mary Ann and she married John William Slatter in 1861. (note: It was thought that the Phoenix may have struck a rock.)
In 1848 on the 19th day of October, Mary Ann Hurren Cooper married my paternal grandfather, Robert Benjamin Franklin, who arrived in Nelson from England in the year 1842. He came out on the S. Lloyds which arrived on the 15th of February at the Haven Nelson. He and two brothers, James and Alex were listed under the name of Maund, and two  sisters under the name of Franklin. They traveled out with Mrs. Mary Ann Maund who was listed as their mother. The names of the girls were Maria Emily aged 17 years and Sarah Ann aged 15 years. Robert Benjamin was listed as 13 years and Alex 9 years and I believe Thomas was 11 years. But his name (Thomas) was struck off the list so presume he must have been one of the unfortunate children who died on the voyage out from England. In the ship's report, it was stated that no less than 65 children died on the passage. Shortly after their arrival in New Zealand, Robert Benjamin and Alex went back to the name of Franklin.
Mary Ann Maund may have been Mary Ann Franklin before her marriage to Richard Maund. Mary Ann Franklin's name was Godsall.
Robert Benjamin Franklin and Mary Ann Hurren Cooper Franklin had a family of eight, four sons and four daughters. The sons were Robert, Benjamin, Thomas, and George Reuben. The daughters were Alice Maud, Ellen Jane, Agnes, and Jessie.
On 16 July 1867 my grandfather (Paternal) died and once more Mary Anne Hurren was left to morn the loss of a husband, and father of her children. He was only 39 years of age and my grandmother 43. Very young to have been widowed twice.
During the time of one of the disturbances between the Maoris and the white settlers, my grandmother was befriended by a Maori who had evidently some influence. At this time many of the settlers were massacred, but my grandmother and her young family were spared as a result of the intervention of this Maori. He came to her and told her of what was going to take place (he could speak a little English) but told her that if she wold do as he told her she would be safe, also her children. She was living quite a distance from any of the other settlers and was alone with her children and so was naturally terrified of what might happen to them. But the Maori had told her to stay in the house and keep the children in the house with her and they would be safe. As time went on, she became more anxious and almost decided to take the children outside and try to hide amongst the trees. But then she thought of what the Maori had said to her, that she would be safe provided she stayed in the house with the children. So she stayed and when the raiding party came they went through the house but when they came to her cabin trunk they became very suspicious as they thought it large enough for a man to hide in it. She could not speak any Maori, but tried to tell them, by raising both her hands to lift the lid. This she did several times. Then one of the party understood what she was trying to convey to them. He went over to the trunk, but made several attempts before finally raising the lid, as he was still afraid of what might be hidden inside. This trunk contained many of grandmother's cherished possessions which she had brought out from England with her. These she gave to the Maoris hoping and praying that they would take them and leave her and her children in safety. This they did after a final look around.
When her family was grown up she used to go over to visit her neighbor whose property adjoined hers so I have been told as she would be worried as to whether he was in good health or she could have had an accident. Her neighbor was Mr. William Douglas and was a widower. He too was left alone as his family were married and had homes of their own. If he did not see my grandmother about, he would be over to see if she was alright. In 1880 they decided to get married and so help each other. William Douglas was born in Jedburg Scotland in 1819 and married Mary Dixon at North Shids Scotland in 1841 at the age of 22 and came to New Zealand in 1843. He died on 20 Jan 1901 leaving Mary Anne Hurren a widow for the third time. He also left a family of five sons and three daughters by his first marriage.
My grandmother Mary Ann Hurren lived until the 5th of October 1916. Many of her decedents learned to love and honor this wonderful old pioneer as did many others who came in contact with her. She spent many of her last years at our home in Kopuaranga and she was sadly missed when she died there in 1916. She was buried in the Gunderson family plot along side her son (My father) George Reubin Franklin who had preceded her on 18 July 1901. (This being her wish). At the Mauriceville West Lutheran Cemetery, Wairarapa, New Zealand.
The house where my father was born and where he spent his boyhood days and later when he was ill came to stay with his mother in hopes of recovering in some small measure his health, overlooked Ruby Bay. I had often wondered why I was given the name of Ruby, but it was not until 1934 when I was staying with my brother Alex and his wife, formerly Catherine Drummond, at Braeburn Moutere that I found out. My brother took us for a motor trip around to place he thought that I might be interested in seeing. He pointed out the place where the house my father was born in once stood. It had been destroyed by fire, I understand, but the trees were still there and part of the garden was still in evidence. There is a beautiful view from this place of Ruby Bay. My brother told me that my father named me Ruby after this bay which he loved so much.
My mother was born in Copoenhagen Denmark on the 12th of March 1866 and came to New Zealand with her father Gunder Heinrich Gundersen and her mother Hermione Benedicte Bahn Gunderson and her sisters Betty Emile and Jenny Henriette. Also an Aunt Johanne Bahn per the S Crusader which left from London October 10, 1872 and arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand on 6 January 1873. Her only brother at that time was Thor Johan who died on the voyage out. His age was one year and some months.
My grandfather Gunder Heinrich Gundersen left Denmark for London England 12 months before they embarked for New Zealand, as he wished to learn more of the English language and more of the English customs before coming out here. My grandmother had spent some time in England before her marriage. Hermione, or (Hermine) Benedicte Gundersen and her sister Johanne Bahn stayed in Christchurch for some time with the family after Gunder Heinrich Gundersen had left en rout to Maruriceville. They opened up a laundry there and waited until it was possible for them to travel to their destination in the Wairarapa. The roads were little more than tracks in those days. Their first house was built from rough sawn timber and slabs to shingle the roof. The shingles were hand cut.

There is a story told about the fact that in Mauriceville at the Gunderson's place there was a wooden platform built upon which they held dances.

Edwards, 1039 N 2575 W, Layton, UT 84041-7709, U.S.A. "Hi Shon,
Thanks for your emails, we have been watching the live coverage from New York
and Washington, it's been on T.V. continuous over the last 30 or so hours and
is just unbelievable. We can only hope that something like this never happens
again.
Just been going through my notes and thought some of this maybe helpful to you.
These are some stories passed down by Auntie Hilda (Franklin - Alice and Ina's
sister) - I quote:-
We know Hermione married beneath her, she had something to do with the Danish
royal court. Gunder Gundersen was to be made the Danish equivalent to an
English baron. He refused the title and emigrated with his little family to get
away from protocol etc. He didn't like the way the ordinary people were
treated. There is a story that Agnes Marie was born in the bed that Queen
Victoria slept in when she visited Denmark. Uncle George (Franklin) thought
Gunder was an agricultural pharmacist in Denmark and also worked somewhere in
the palace (may have been the case, for him to have met Hermione).
When they left Denmark, the Gundersens and Johanne Bahn went to England and
lived in London for a year, this allowed Gunder to learn the English language
and learn their customs. They arrived in Lyttleton, Christchurch, South Island,
and while there Gunder was approached by either government or immigration

officials and was asked to go to Mauriceville, in the Wairarapa where there
were a number of Danish and Norwegian settlers. They needed an interpreter, as
neither could speak the others language and Gunder understood all of them. He
agreed to go and left his wife, children and sister in law in Christchurch
until such time as he could send for them. The family started a laundry
business there, whilst they waited for news that they could rejoin Gunder.
Gunder and Hermione did not wish anyone to know their origins as they felt it
would have created a barrier between them and other settlers. They said the
past was past, and they had left it all behind them, Granny Franklin (Agnes
Marie Gundersen) said the same thing. The fact that they were educated could
have created a barrier, however anyone with an education was useful to the
community as it was essential to have someone to deal with the local
administration.
Gunder would write letters home for those settlers who could not read or write
and read replies to them.
Agnes Marie ran the store and post office from her home (that little cottage I
sent you a photo of, and raised 12 kids there !) after her husband, George
Reuben Franklin, died of diabetes in 1901. She was also a midwife, often having
her patients stay with her in her own home. She smoked and cured her own ham
and bacon, and also for some of the Danish farmers and they gave her joints of
meat for herself and family. She had a small orchard, bottled and pickled her
own fruit and vegetables as well as making jam etc. She starched the stiff
collars of the best shirts for some of the men who worked at the timber mill.
She also found time to crotchet and sew for her large family. The kids had to
do most of the housework while Agnes was busy. Hilda says there was one time in
her early teens when she was taking the outgoing mail to the train and
collecting the incoming mail. There were Maoris standing on the platform and
she was very scared of Maoris because she had listened to stories of the recent
Maori wars. No way was she going to meet the train. That was one day the mail
was missed.
Agnes Franklins home in Kopuaranga (the photo) was burnt down while she was
away - the fire was caused by a hole in the chimney which was never repaired.
Auntie Nell ( Ellen) and her husband Charles Wright were living there at the
time. Upstairs in the " dark room" were all Agnes's papers, so goodness knows
what stories went up in smoke.
Hopefully, this is of interest to you, have you got Auntie Ruby's notes on the
early days of Mary Anne Hurren ? I'll send them if you haven't. Think thats
about all for now - it's a beautiful day here today, so I'm off outside to
clear up branches etc of the pine trees we've had cut down.
Look forward to hearing from you.
Regards, Lynda.".

-- MORE INFO →Portrait of Gunder Gundersen
This photograph of Gundersen is thought to have been taken prior to his migration to New Zealand in 1872-73. The Gundersen family first went to Christchurch before settling in Mauriceville West where Gundersen was the first Postmaster in 1881. Gundersen was one of the seven local farmers who in August 1889 subscribed £20 each to found the Mauriceville Dairy Co. Ltd., which eventually became the source of the town's small-scale prosperity.

History of Elizabeth Kegg Comish
Adapted From an Account by Her Granddaughter
Susie Allen

Elizabeth Kegg was born 22 December 1805 at Kirk Rushen, Rushen, Isle of Man to Patrick Kegg and Jane Moore. She was never able to go to school, but had a quick mind, particularly regarding math skills. She was of medium height and slim. Generally she wore a collar or ruching on the neck of her dress, and always wore a brooch or breastpin. She always wore her hair curled in front with a bob in the back.
Elizabeth married William Comish from Arbory, Isle of Man, 12 Feb 1831 at the age of 26. They had nine children. They are: Jane (11 Oct 1831), William (11 April 1833, Margaret (28 Sept 1834), John (1 Dec 1838), Eleanor (30 Dec 1840), Robert Nephi (12 Dec 1841), Joseph (7 July 1844), and Emma (12 Jun 1848). All grew into manhood and womanhood except for Joseph. He died at the age of eight in St. Louis, Missouri.
It was not until 1848 that Elizabeth joined the church. This was seven years after her husband was baptized, and a few months after their youngest child was born. It may have been her mother’s opposition to the Mormon religion that kept her from affiliating herself with the Church earlier. It is rumored that her mother threatened to disinherit her if she joined the Church and leave her inheritance to her sister Nell. Her mother died, 17 Sept 1845. Her father had died thirty-four years earlier. On one occasion while discussing the Mormon religion her mother asked how she knew it was true. She said, pointing to the fireplace, “Do you see that kettle on the hob?” Her mother answered, “yes.” “Well just as surely as you know that the kettle is on the hob, just so surely I know that Mormonism is true.
Elizabeth passed through many trials. It was particularly difficult when her husband and their eldest daughter, Jane, emigrated to America. She was left alone for two years to care for a large family. Not only that, but she had the anxiety of not knowing the status of her husband and daughter due to the time it took to get mail in those days.
In 1855 Elizabeth came to Utah and settled in Kaysville. She and William remained there until 1860 when they received direction from Brigham Young to move to Franklin. They were with the first group who settled in Franklin, the first settlement established in the State of Idaho. Elizabeth was accomplished in all the home skills. She spun her own yarn and made clothing from it. She kept a garden, a cow, chickens and turkeys to sustain the family. It was noted by her family that she could make do with very little and provide for her family when there were very limited resources. She was very independent and not only tried to support herself and her family with the necessities, she also was very generous and hospitable. Neighbors made a habit of stopping by for a visit and were always treated to great hospitality and served refreshments.
It is said that Elizabeth was a believer in witches and fairies. In her native land she would not walk across the park at midnight for fear of disturbing fairies dancing. Though she couldn’t read herself, she enjoyed listening to others read while she knitted.
Elizabeth’s husband died 16 December 1877 when she was 72. Before her own death, four of her children had preceded her. Joseph who died as a young boy and three other children, Elizabeth (age 46), Eleanor (age 44), and Robert Nephi (age 42). All died the same year, 1882. Elizabeth passed away in January, Eleanor in June and Robert Nephi in November. This must have been difficult because each of these children left families including young children. In one case, Elizabeth took a three-day-old baby to raise along with four other children until other arrangements could be made. Elizabeth died in Franklin, Idaho, 6 November 1885 of dropsy.

They had the following children.

-- "Sermon

By Elder P. P. Pratt, before the Conference, April 7th, 1853.

After reading his oration, delivered on the North East Corner Stone, Elder P. P. Pratt spoke as follows:

I was led to reflection on this subject, not only by my acquaintance with the present state of the world, and the movements, and powers which seem new to many, but because this text written by Isaiah so many centuries since, and copied by Nephi ages before the birth of Jesus Christ, seemed as appropriate, and as directly adapted to the present state of things, as if written but yesterday; or a year since.

Should not a people seek unto their God for the living to hear from the dead? is a question by the prophet, and at a time when they shall invite you to seek unto those familiar with spirits, and to wizards etc; or in other words, to magnetizers, rappers, clairvoyants, writing mediums, etc.  When they shall say these things unto you then is the time to consider the question of that ancient prophet; “Should not a people seek unto their
God, for the living to hear from the dead?”

We hear much of late, about visions, trances, clairvoyance, mediums of communication with the spirit world,–writing mediums etc., by which the world of spirits is said to have found means to communicate with spirits in the flesh.  The world is agitated on these subjects.  They are not working in a corner.  Religious ministers are said to preach; editors to write and print; judges to judge etc, by this kind of inspiration.  It is brought into requisition, to develop the sciences, to detect crimes, and in short  to mingle in all the interests of life.

In the first place, what are we talking about, when we touch the question of the living hearing from the dead?  It is a saying, that, “dead men tell no tales.”  If this is not in the Bible it is somewhere else, and if it is true, it is just as good as if it were in the Bible.

The Sadducees in the time of Jesus, believed there was no such thing as angels or spirits, or existence in another sphere: that when an individual was dead it was the final end of the workings his intellectual being.  That the elements are dissolved, and mingled with the great fountain from which they emanated, which was the end of individuality, or conscious existence.

Jesus in reply to them took up the argument from the Scriptures, or history of the ancient fathers, venerated by reason of antiquity; in hopes by this means to influence the Sadducees, or at least the Pharisees and others by means so powerful and so well adapted to the end in view.

Said he, God has declared himself the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  Now God is not the God of the dead but the God of the living; as much as to say that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were not dead but living.  That they had never been dead at all, but had always been living,–that they never did die, in the sense of the word that these Sadducees supposed, but were absolutely alive.

Now if intelligent beings who once inhabited flesh, such as our fathers, mothers, wives, children, etc., have really died, and are now dead in the sense of the word, as understood by the ancient Sadducees, or modern Atheist, then it is in vain to talk of converse with the dead.  All controversy, in that case, is at an end on the subject of correspondence with the dead, because an intelligence must exist before it can communicate.  If these individuals are dead, in the sense that the human body dies, then there is no communication from them.  This we know, because of our own observation and experience. We have seen many dead bodies, but have never known of a single instance of any intelligence communicated therefrom.

Jesus, in his argument with the Sadducees handled the subject according to the strictest principles of ancient and modern theology, and true philosophy.  He conveyed the idea in the clearest terms, that an individual intelligence, or identity could never die.

The outward tabernacle inhabited by a spirit, returns to the element from which it emanated.  But the thinking being, the individual, active agent, or identity that inhabited that tabernacle never ceased to exist, to think, act, live, move, or have a being, never ceased to exercise those sympathies, affections, hopes, and aspirations which are founded in the very nature of intelligences; being the inherent, and invaluable principle of their eternal existence.

No–they never cease,–They live, move, think, act, converse, feel, love, hate, believe, doubt, hope, and desire.

But what are they, if they are not flesh and bones?  What are they, if they are not tangible to our gross organs of sense?  Of what are they composed that we can neither see, hear, nor handle them, except we are quickened, or our organs touched by the principles of vision, clairvoyance, or spiritual sight?  What are they?  Why, they are organized intelligences.  What are they made of?  They are made of the element which we call spirit, which is as much an element of material existence  as earth, air, electricity, or any other tangible substance recognized by man; but so subtle, so refined is its nature, that it is not tangible to our gross organs.  It is invisible to us, unless we are quickened by a portion of the same element and, like electricity and several other substances, it is only known, or made manifest to our senses, by its effects.  For instance, electricity is not always visible to us, but its existence is made manifest by its operations upon the wire, or upon the nerves.  We cannot see the air, but we feel its effects, and without it, we cannot breathe.

If a wire were extended in connection with the equatorial line of our globe in one entire circle of 25,000 miles in extent, the electric fluid would convey a token from one intelligence to another, the length of the entire circle in a very small portion of a second; or, we will say in the twinkling of an eye.  This, then, proves that the spiritual fluid or element called electricity is an actual physical and tangible power, and is as much a real and tangible substance as the ponderous rocks which were laid on yesterday in the foundation of our contemplated Temple.

It is true that this subtle fluid, or spiritual element is endowed with the powers of locomotion in a far greater degree than the more gross or solid elements of nature.  That its refined particles penetrate amid the other elements with greater ease, and meet with less resistance from the air or other substances, than would the more gross elements.  Hence its speed, or superior powers of motion.

Now, let us apply this philosophy to all the degrees of spiritual element, from electricity, which may be assumed to be one of the lowest, or more gross elements of spiritual matter, up through all the gradations, of the invisible fluids, till we arrive at a substance so holy, so pure so endowed with intellectual attributes and sympathetic affections, that it may be said to be on a par, or level, (in its attributes,) with man.

Let a given quantity of this element, thus endowed, or capacitated, be organized in the size and form of man, let every organ be developed, formed, and endowed, precisely after the pattern or model of man’s outward or fleshly tabernacle, what would we call this individual organized portion of the spiritual element?

We would call it a spiritual body; an individual intelligence; an agent endowed with life, with a degree of independence, or inherent will; with the powers of motion, of thought, and with the attributes of moral, intellectual, and sympathetic affections and emotions.

We would conceive of it as possessing eyes to see, ears to hear, hands to handle, as in possession of the organ of taste, of smelling and of speech.

Such beings are we, when we have laid off this outward tabernacle of flesh.  We are in every way interested, in our relationships, kindred ties, sympathies, affections, and hopes as if we had continued to live, but had stepped aside, and were experiencing the loneliness of absence for a season.  Our ancestors, our posterity, to the remotest ages of antiquity, or of future time, are all brought within the circle of our sphere of joys, sorrows, interests, or expectations; each forms a link in the great chain of life, and in the science of mutual salvation, improvement, and exaltation through the blood of the Lamb.

Our prospects, hopes, faith, charity, enlightenment, improvement; in short, all our interests are blended, and more or less influenced by the acts of each.

Is this the kind of being that departs from our sight when its earthly tabernacle is laid off, and the veil of eternity is lowered between us?  Yes, verily.  Where then does it go?

To heaven, says one; to the eternal world of glory, says another; to the celestial kingdom, to inherit thrones and crowns, in all the fullness of the presence of the Father and of Jesus Christ, says a third.

Now my dear hearers, these things are not so.–Nothing of the kind.  Thrones, kingdoms, crowns, principalities, and powers, in the celestial and eternal worlds, and the fullness of the presence of the Father, and of His Son Jesus Christ, are reserved for resurrected beings, who dwell in Immortal flesh.  The world of resurrected beings, and the world of spirits, are two distinct spheres; as much so as our own sphere is distinct from that of the spirit world.

Where then does the spirit go, on its departure from its earthly tabernacle?  It passes to the next sphere of human existence, called the world of spirits.  A veil being drawn between us in the flesh and that world of spirits.  Well, says one, is there no more than one place in the spirit world?  Yes, there are many places, and degrees in that world as in this.  Jesus Christ, when absent from his flesh, did not ascend to the Father, to be crowned and enthroned in power.  Why?  Because he had not yet a resurrected body, and had therefore a mission to perform in another sphere.–Where did he go?  To the world of spirits; to wicked sinful spirits, who died in their sins, being swept off by the flood of Noah.  The thief on the cross, who died at the same time, also went to the same world, and to the same particular place in the same world; for he was a sinner, and would of course go to the prison of the condemned, there to await the ministry of that gospel which had failed to reach his case while on the earth.

How many other places Jesus might have visited while in the spirit world, is not for me to say; but there was a moment in which the poor, uncultivated, ignorant thief was with him in that world.  And as he commenced, though late, to repent while on the earth, we have reason to hope that, that moment was improved by our Savior, in ministering to him that gospel which he had no opportunity to teach to him, while expiring on the cross.  “This day shalt thou be with me in Paradise,” said Jesus, or in other words, this day shalt thou be with me in the next sphere of existence—the world of spirits.

Now mark the difference.  Jesus was there, as a preacher of righteousness; as one holding the keys of apostleship, or priesthood; anointed to preach glad tidings to the meek; to bind up the broken hearted, to preach liberty to the captive, and the opening of the prison to them that were bound.  What did the thief go there for?  He went there in a state of ignorance, and sin; being uncultivated, unimproved and unprepared for salvation.  He went there to be taught and to complete that repentance, which in a dying moment he commenced on the earth.

He had beheld Jesus expire on the cross, and he had implored him to remember him when he should come into possession of his kingdom.  The Savior under these extreme circumstances, did not then teach him the gospel, but referred him to the next opportunity, when they should meet in the spirit world.  If the thief thus favored, continued to improve, he is no doubt waiting in hope, for the signal to be given at the sound of the next trump, for him to leave the spirit world, and to re-enter the fleshly tabernacle, and to ascend to the highest degree of felicity.  Jesus Christ, on the other hand, departed from the spirit world on the third day, and re-entered his fleshly tabernacle, in which he ascended, and was crowned at the right hand of the Father.  Jesus Christ then, and the thief on the cross, have not dwelt together in the same kingdom or place, for this eighteen hundred years; nor have we proof that they have seen each other during that time.

To say that Jesus Christ dwells in the world of spirits with those whose bodies are dead would not be the truth.  He is not there.  He only stayed there till the third day.  He then returned to his tabernacle, and ministered among the sons of earth for forty days, where he ate, drank, talked, preached, reasoned out of the scriptures, commissioned, commanded, blessed, etc.  Why did he do this?  Because he had ascended on high and been crowned with all power, in heaven and on earth, therefore he had authority to do all these things.

So much then for that wonderful question, that has been asked by our christian neighbors so many thousand times, in the abundance of their charity, for those who (like the thief on the cross,) die in their sins, or without baptism, and the other gospel ordinances.

The question naturally arises, do all the people who die without the gospel hear it as soon as they arrive in the world of spirits?  To illustrate this, let us look at the dealings of God with the people in this world.—“What can we reason but from what we know?”  We know and understand the things of this world in some degree, because they are visible, and we are daily conversant with them.  Do all the people in this world immediately hear the gospel as soon as they are capable of understanding?  No, indeed, but very few, in comparison have heard it at all.

Ask the poor Lamanites who have, with their fathers before them, inhabited these mountains for a thousand years, whether they have ever heard the gospel, and they will tell you nay.  But why not?  Is it not preached on the earth?  Yea, verily, but the earth is wide, and circumstances differ very greatly among its different inhabitants.  The Jews once had the gospel, with its apostleship, powers and blessings offered unto them; but they rejected it as a people; and for this reason it was taken from them, and thus many generations of them have been born, and have lived and died without it, so with the Gentiles, and so with the Lamanites.  God has seen proper to offer the gospel with its priesthood and powers in different ages and countries; but it has been as often rejected, and therefore withdrawn from the earth.  The consequence was that the generations of men have for many ages, come and gone in ignorance of its principles and the glorious hopes they inspire.

Now these blessings would have continued on the earth, and would have been enjoyed in all the ages and nations of man, but for the agency of the people. They chose their own forms of government, laws, institutions, religions, rulers, and priests, instead of yielding to the influence and guidance of the chosen vessels of the Lord, who were appointed to instruct and govern them.

Now, how are they situated in the spirit world? If we reason from analogy, we would at once conclude that things existed there after the same pattern.  I have not the least doubt, but there are spirits there who have dwelt there a thousand years; who (if we could converse with them face to face) would be found as ignorant of the truths, the ordinances, powers, keys, priesthood, resurrection, and eternal life of the body.  In short, as ignorant of the fullness of the gospel with its hopes and consolations, as is the Pope of Rome, the Bishop of Canterbury, or like the Chiefs of the Indian tribes of Utah.

And why this ignorance in the spirit world?  Because a portion of the inhabitants thereof, are found unworthy of the consolations of the gospel until the fullness of time; until they have suffered in hell, in the dungeons of darkness, or the prisons of the condemned, amid the buffetings of fiends, and malicious and lying spirits.

As in earth, so in the spirit world.  No person can enter into the privileges of the gospel, until the keys are turned, and the gospel opened by those in authority, for all which there is a time, according to the wise dispensations of justice and mercy.

It was many—many—centuries before Christ lived in the flesh, that a whole generation, (eight souls excepted) was cut off by the flood.  What became of them?  I do not know exactly all their history in the spirit world.  But this much I know, they have heard the gospel from the lips of a crucified Redeemer, and have the privilege of being judged according to men in the flesh.  As these persons were ministered to by Jesus Christ after he had been put to death, it is reasonable to suppose that they had waited all that time, without the knowledge or privileges of the gospel.

How long did they wait?  You may reckon for yourselves.  The long ages—centuries—thousands of years which intervened between the flood of Noah, and the death of Christ.  O the weariness, the tardy movement of time!  The lingering ages, for a people to dwell in condemnation, darkness, ignorance, and despondency, as a punishment for their sins!  For they had been filled with violence while on the earth in the flesh, and had rejected the preaching of Noah, and the prophets which were before him.

Between these two dispensations, so distant from each other in point of time, they were left to linger without hope, and without God in the spirit world; and similar has been the fate of the poor Jew, the miserable Lamanite, and many others in the flesh.  Between the commission and ministry of the former and latter day saints, and apostles, there has been a long and dreary night of darkness.  Some fifteen to seventeen centuries have passed away, in which the generations of man have lived without the keys of the gospel.

Whether in the flesh, or in the spirit world, is this not hell enough?  Who can imagine a greater hell than that before our eyes, in the circumstances of the poor, miserable, degraded, Indian and his ancestors, since the keys of the gospel were taken from them some fifteen hundred years ago?  Those who had the gospel in the former dispensations, and were made partakers of its spirit, its knowledge, and its powers, and then turned away, and became the enemies of God and of his saints, the malicious and willful opposers of that which they knew to be true, have no forgiveness in this world, neither in the spirit world, which is the world next to come.

Such apostates seek in all dispensations, to bring destruction on the innocent, and to shed innocent blood, or consent thereto.  For such, I again repeat, I know no forgiveness.  Their children, who, by the conduct of such fathers, have been plunged into ignorance and misery for so many ages, and have lived without the privileges of the gospel, will look down upon such a parentage, with mingled feelings of horror, contempt, reproach, and pity, as the agents who plunged their posterity into the depths of misery and woe.

Think of those swept away by the flood in the days of Noah.  Did they wait a long time in prison?  forty years!  O what a time to be imprisoned!  What do you say to a hundred years?  a thousand, two thousand, three or four thousand years to wait?  Without what?  Without even a clear idea or hope of a resurrection from the dead; without the broken heart being bound up; the captive delivered; or the door of the prison opened.  Did not they wait?  Yes, they did; until Christ was put to death in the flesh.

Now what would have been the result, if they had repented while in the flesh, at the preaching of Noah?  Why, they would have died, in hope of a glorious resurrection, and would have enjoyed the society of the redeemed, and lived in happiness in the spirit world, till the resurrection of the Son of God.—Then they would have received their bodies, and would have ascended with him, amid thrones, principalities, and powers in heavenly places.

I will suppose, in the spirit world, a grade of spirits of the lowest order, composed of murderers, robbers, thieves, adulterers, drunkards, and persons ignorant, uncultivated, etc., who are in prison, or in hell, without hope, without God, and unworthy as yet of gospel instruction.  Such spirits, if they could communicate, would not tell you of the resurrection, or of any of the gospel truths; for they know nothing about them.  They would not tell you about heaven, or priesthood, for in all their meanderings in the world of spirits, they have never been privileged with the ministry of a holy priest.  If they should tell all the truth they possess, they could not tell much.

Take another class of spirits, pious, well disposed men; for instance, the honest Quaker, Presbyterian, or other sectarian; who, although honest, and well disposed had not while in the flesh, the privilege of the Priesthood and gospel.  They believe in Jesus Christ, but died in ignorance of his ordinances, and had not clear conceptions of his doctrines, and of the resurrection.  They expected to go to that place called heaven as soon as they were dead, and that their doom would then and there be fixed, without any further alteration or preparation.  Suppose they should come back, with liberty to tell all they know.  How much light could we get from them?  They could only tell you about the nature of things in the world in which they live.  And even that world you could not comprehend, by their description thereof, any more than you can describe colors to a man born blind, or sounds to those who have never heard.

What then, could you get from them?  Why, common chit chat, in which there would be a mixture of truth and of error and mistakes, in mingled confusion, all their communications would betray the same want of clear and logical conceptions, and sound sense and philosophy; as would characterize the same class of spirits in the flesh.

Who, then, is prepared, among the spirits in the spirit world, to communicate the truth on the subject of salvation; to guide the people:—to give advice,–to confer consolation;–to heal the sick,–to administer joy and gladness, and hope of immortality and eternal life,–founded on manifest truth.  ‘

All that have been raised from the dead, and clothed with immortality;–all that have ascended to yonder heavens, and been crowned as kings and priests—all such are our fellow servants, and our brethren the prophets, who have the testimony of Jesus;–all such are waiting for the work of God among their posterity on the earth.

They could declare glad tidings if we were only prepared to commune with them.  What else?  Peter James, Joseph, Hyrum, Father Smith,—any, or all of those ancient or modern Saints, who have departed this life; who are clothed upon with the powers of eternal Apostleship, or Priesthood: who have gone to the world of spirits;–not to sorrow, but as joyful messengers, bearing glad tidings of eternal truth, to the spirits in prison.  Could not these teach us good things?  Yes, if they were permitted to do so.

But suppose all spirits were honest and aimed at truth, yet each one could only converse of the things he is privileged to know, or comprehend; or which have been revealed in his understanding, or brought within the range of his intellect.

If this be the case, what then do we wish, in communicating with the eternal world, by visions, angels, or ministering spirits?  Why!  If a person is sick they would like to be visited, comforted, or healed by an angel or spirit.  If a man is in prison he would like an angel or spirit to visit him, and comfort or deliver him.  A man to be shipwrecked would like to be instructed in the way of escape for himself and fellows from a watery grave.  In case of extreme hunger a loaf of bread brought by an angel would not be unacceptable.

If a man was journeying and murderers were laying in wait for him in a certain road, an angel would be useful to him in telling him of the circumstances and to take another road.

If a man were journeying to preach the gospel, an angel would be useful to tell the neighbors of his high and holy calling, as in case of Peter, and Cornelius.  Or would you not like to have angels all around you, to guard, guide, and advise you in every emergency?

The Saints would like to enter a holy Temple, and have their President and his assistants administer for their dead.  They love their fathers although they had once almost forgotten them.  Our fathers have forgotten, to hand down to us their genealogy. They have not felt sufficient interest to transmit to us their names, and the time and place of birth, and in many instances they have not taught us when and where ourselves were born, or who were our grandparents, and their ancestry.  Why is all this?  It is because of that veil of blindness which is cast over the earth; because there has been no true church, priesthood, or patriarchal order; no holy place, for the deposit or preservation of the sacred archives of antiquity; no knowledge of the eternal kindred ties, relationship, or mutual interests of eternity.  The hearts of the children had become estranged from the fathers, and the hearts of the fathers from the children, until one came in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the keys of these things; to open communication between worlds, and to kindle in our bosoms that glow of eternal affection which lay dormant in our bosoms.

Suppose our temple was ready, and we should enter there to act for the dead.  We could only act for those whose names are known to us.  And these are few with the most of us Americans.  And why is this?  We have never had time to look to the heavens, or to the past or future; so busy have we been with the things of the earth, we have hardly had time to think of ourselves, to say nothing of our fathers.

It is time that all this stupidity and indifference should come to an end; and that our hearts were opened, and our charities extended; and that our bosoms expanded, to reach forth after who?  Those whom we consider dead!  God has condescended so far to our capacity, as to speak of our fathers, as if they were dead, although they are all living spirits, and will live forever.  We have no dead!  Only think of it!  Our fathers are all living, thinking, active agents, we have only been taught that they are dead.

Shall I speak my feelings, that I had on yesterday while we were laying those Corner Stones of the Temple?  Yes I will utter them, if I can.

It was not with my eyes; not with the power of actual vision; but by my intellect, by the natural faculties inherent in man; by the exercise of my reason, upon known principles, or by the power of the spirit, that it appeared to me that Joseph Smith and his associate spirits the Latter Day Saints, hovered about as on the brink of that foundation; and with them all the angels and spirits from the other world, that might be permitted; or that were not too busy elsewhere.

Why should I think so?  In the first place what else on this earth have they to be interested about?  Where would their eyes be turned, in the wide earth, if not centered here?  Where would their hearts and affections be, if they cast a look or a thought towards the dark speck in the heavens, which we inhabit?

Unless to the people of these valleys and mountains, are there others who have the keys for the redemption of the dead?  Is any one else preparing a sanctuary for the holy conversation and ministrations pertaining to their exaltation?  No verily.  No other people have opened their hearts to conceive conceptions so grand.  No other people have their sympathies drawn out to such an extent towards the fathers.

No:–If you go from this people, to hear the doctrines of others you will hear the doleful sayings:  “As the tree falls, so it layeth.”  As death leaves you so judgment will find you,”  there is no work nor desire, nor knowledge in the grave, etc., etc. “There is no change after death; but you are fixed; irretrievably fixed; for all eternity.”  The moment the breath leaves the body you must go to an extreme of heaven or of hell;  there to rejoice with Peter on thrones of power in the presence of Jesus Christ in the third heaven; or on the other hand to roll in the flames of hell with murderers and devils.”  Such are the doctrines of our sectarian brethren who profess to believe in Christ but know not the mysteries of godliness, and the boundless resources of eternal charity; and of that mercy which endureth forever.

It is here; that the spirit world would look with an intense interest;–it is here that the nations of the dead, if I may so call them would concentrate their hopes of ministration on the earth in their behalf.  It is here that the countless millions of the spirit world will look for the ordinances of redemption; so far as they have been enlightened by the preaching of the gospel, since the keys of the former dispensation were taken away from the earth.

Why?  If they looked upon the earth at all, it would be upon these Corner Stones which we laid yesterday; if they listened at all it would be to hear the sounds of voices and instruments, and to the blending of sacred and martial music in honor of the commencement of a Temple for the redemption of the dead.  With what intensity of interest did they listen to the songs of Zion, and witness the feelings of their friends.  They were glad to behold the glittering bayonets of the guards around the Temple ground, and they longed for the day when there would be a thousand where there is now but one.  They wish to see a strong people, gathered and united, in sufficient power to maintain a spot on earth where a baptismal font might be erected for the baptism of the dead.

It was there that all their expectations were centered.  What cared they in all the golden palaces; marble pavements or guilded halls of state on earth?  What cared they for all the splendor, equipage, titles, and empty sounds of the self styled great of this world, which all pass away as the dew of the morning before the rising sun.  What cared they for the struggles,–the battles,–the victories,–and numerous other worldly interests that vibrate the bosoms of men on either side?  None of these things would interest them.  Their interests were centered here; and thence extended to the work of God among the nations of the earth.

Did Joseph, in the spirit world, think of any thing else on yesterday; but the doings of his brethren on the earth?  He might have been necessarily employed, and so busy as to be obliged to think of other things.  But if I were to judge from the acquaintance I had with him in this life, and from my knowledge of the spirit of priesthood I would suppose him to be so hurried as to have little or no time to cast an eye or a thought after his friends on the earth.  He was always busy while here, and so are we.  The spirit of our holy ordination and anointing will not let us rest.  The spirit of his calling will never suffer him to rest, while satan, sin, death or darkness possess a foot of ground on this earth.  While the spirit world contains the spirit of one of his friends, or the grave holds captive one of their bodies he will never rest, or slacken his labors.

You might as well talk of Saul king of Israel resting while Israel was oppressed by the Canaanites or Philistines, after Samuel had anointed him to be king.  At first he was like another man; but when occasion called into action the energies of a king, the spirit of his anointing came upon him.  He slew an ox, divided into twelve parts, and sent a part to each of the tribes of Israel, with this proclamation:  “So shall it be done to the ox of the man who will not come up to the help of the Lord of hosts.”

Ye elders of Israel!  you will find that there is a spirit upon you which will urge you to continued exertion; and will never suffer you to feel at ease in Zion while a work remains unfinished in the great plan of redemption of our race.  It will inspire the Saints to build, plant improve, cultivate, make the desert fruitful;–in short to use the elements, send missions abroad, build up states and kingdoms and Temples at home, and send abroad the light of a never ending day to every people, and nation of the globe.

You have been baptized;–you have had the laying on of hands; and some have been ordained, and some anointed with a holy anointing.  A spirit has been given you.  And you will find, if you undertake to rest, it will be the hardest work you ever performed.  I came home from a foreign mission.  I presented myself to our President, and inquired what I should do next;–rest;–said he.

If I had been set to turn the world over,– to dig down a mountain, to go to the ends of the earth, or traverse the deserts of Arabia, it would have been easier than to have undertaken to rest, while the Priesthood was upon me.  I have received the holy anointing and I can never rest, till the last enemy is conquered, death destroyed, and truth reigns triumphant.

May God bless you all, Amen

88. Gunder Eriksen BERG [scrapbook] 1 was born 2 on 27 May 1827 in Trondheim, Nord Trøndelag, Norge. He died on 25 Jun 1891 in Logan, Cache, Utah, United States. Gunder was sealed to his parents on 09 Apr 1946. He was baptized on 14 Nov 1862. He was endowed on 11 Jun 1884. Gunder married Ellen JACOBSEN 1 on 29 Jun 1853. They were sealed on 09 Apr 1946 in the Salt Lake Utah temple. [Parents]

Gunder Erikesen Berg was a poor carpenter whose ancestors lived in Trondheim, Norway for some generations before him, as we as in Trepil - a small island town a few miles from the Swedish border. Gunder and his wife Ellen Jacobsen were living in a small two-family dwelling in Trondheim when they heard the hymn :Oh My Father" being sung in the neighboring apartment. Asking about the song, they found Mormon Elder's next door. Soon they were studying about the gospel and were baptized by Elders Antone Schankym the same elder who converted the Widtsoe family.
Gunder set about to save for the expense of the trip across the ocean to America and Utah. The trip was paid for by the profits gained by Gunder from building a house and selling it.
The Gunder Eriksen family - he and his wife Ellen and their children Anna, John Edward, Amelia (Emelia), Bertina, and Cornelious went to Bergen to embark about 1876 or 77. They left one child buried in Trondheim the first Amelia who died as an infant.
It is believed that they adopted the name of Berg aboard the ship before departure. They believed as a group that Scandanavian surnames such as Eriksen, Olsen, etc. were too common for proper identification. Other opinions hold that fathers adopted the name of the form from which they came or their port of embarkation.
The ship was a sailing vessel, a freighter making its last voyage before it bowed out because of the emergence of the steam ships. Apparently it was not sea- worthy. They ran into a great storm and although the ships captain was not a Mormon himself, he claimed, the old hulk would have sunk had there not been Mormons aboard. It was to be last voyage of the ship - and it was. The vessel sank in mid - ocean on its return trip.
While they were aboard the ship the twins, Bertins and Cornelious, discovered a number of cracker barrels in the hold. They thought they were strange thing that they had never seen before and decided to take some. Cornelious was wearing knickers with the band below the knee. They filled the knickers with crackers and went out on deck. They had gone only a few feet when the button on the band broke, and the crackers fell around Cornelious's ankles.
They finally debarked in New York. John Edward, who was about twelve years old, spied some tomatoes being sold in the street. They had never seen tomatoes before. Most of the Europeans called them love apples. They believed they were poisonous. John Edward declared he was going to buy one and eat it. His family frantically warned him with their hands up that he would die if he ate one. He ate it anyway - and lived for many more years.
The family crossed the states by train and settled in Plain City, Weber County - near Ogden - in 1877. After about a year, they moved to Logan, where they began to build a home. Winter came before the basement was even cemented. It was only boarded. The house was located between two canals. When the canals froze over water began to seep into the basement. On Christmas the basement was really flooded. The older members of the family waded, but Cornelious and Bertins used an old tub for transportation, sometimes paddling themselves, sometimes being pushed by John Edward (Eddy).
