Hi Shon,

Thank you for your recent emails, sorry for the delay in responding but I only volunteer one day per week.

I have looked through the back copies of the Greenwood Tree, there is an article dated 9-5-2017 entitled Railway workers in Somerset & Dorset however, this mainly concentrates on the Wimborne Dorset area. I did a search for your ancestor on this article, unfortunately it did not provide anything relevant.

We have listed in our online bookshop a publication from the "my ancestor was" series, entitled my ancestor was a railway worker by Frank Hardy. You can find more details on this book via our website under shop / bookshop / other categories.

I cannot find anything further that is specific to John Gray at Saltford in terms of his railway employment or actual job.

I note in your last email you already have details on John Gray from your own research. I have however, set out below what information I found prior to receipt of your email for reference and confirmation only.

NEW IDEAS FROM BYU GENEALOGICAL CONFERNCE, 5 Aug 2004:
-- USE POOR LAW RECORDS.  These usually have information on everyone in the parish.  This might especially be true in a place where one parent dies, then another -- hopefully we can find something.
-- Write to record offices first.  They have sources and indexes, especially new ones, that we don't have here.
-- Put an ad in the Somerset and  Dorset FHS magazine to find someone who knows something about people who worked on the railroad on the Bath line, which was John Grey's occupation.
-- Also, in the same ad, see if it's possible to find an obituary for John, who died in Saltford in March of 1886.

DEMOGRAPHIC INFORMATION/IDEAS:
-- Those married in Pertwood who originated in other parishes came chiefly from Longbridge Deverill and East Knoyle.  People who had children baptized there lived at Wincanton (Somerset), Frome (Somerset), Longbridge Deverill, Heytesbury, Mon(c)kton Deverill, and Brixton Deverill.  Check possible migration patterns.

IDEAS/SOURCES CHECKED:

-- I went to Pertwood in Jun 1988.  Some new owners had just moved in.  They said many of the residents in years passed had written their names on a barn door, along with his or her corresponding place and date of birth.  A check of this yielded negative results.  The older man told us that there was also a window frame inside the main house that people signed, with the same purpose and information as the door, but that it was such a mess now in that room, as they were just moving in, he wouldn't let us in to see it at the time.  In May 1994, I went back again; the same people lived there, but the woman denied there being any window frame with names on it.  This may be just a ruse and it might be worth checking later.

WRITE NAME OF THE PERTWOOD PEOPLE IN THIS SPACE ABOVE!

SOURCES TO SEARCH:

-- Look in Mere, West Knoyle, and East Knoyle.  The GRAY's are most populous in this particular area, and we have at least a small tie to East Knoyle (this person's child died in 1835 after the death of both of his parents at the age of 17; he was from the parish of EAST KNOYLE at the time of death).

IS EAST KNOYLE THE ONE WE DON'T HAVE PARISH RECORDS FOR?!  CHECK HERE FOR MARY AND THOMAS GRAY'S MARRIAGE, THEIR BIRTHS.  THIS IS PROBABLY WHERE THEY CAME FROM.

-- On birth:  Checked 30 surrounding parishes to find any Thomas GRAY's born: GIVE LIST.

-- On marriage:  Check for marriage records in the area which show a Thomas GRAY from Hill Deverill marrying a Mary at just about the right time.  Children's death records are not not good.  They are not supposed to have parents' names. Am checking for marriage records now (10/95), but may have missed a few possible years (1800-1805), although did also check much of this.  I'm not sure, but this maybe should be checked again, both with PRs and BTs.  Looked many parishes in the surrounding area, nix.  The records searched are:

RECORDS SEARCHED FOR MARRIAGE:

Bishop's Transcripts:  Hilperton, Codford St. Mary, Boyton, Hill Deverill, Brixton Deverill, Hindon, Trowbridge, and Sedgehill.

Marriage Parish Register Extracts:  Monkton Deverill, Sherrington, and Boyton.

Parish Registers:  Little Cheverill, Westbury, Warminster (all), Bishopstrow, Heytesbury, Knook (missing 1809-1813), Upton Lovell, Codford St. Peter, Stockton, Chilmark, Fonthill Bishop, East Tisbury, West Tisbury, Alvediston, Berwick St. John, Berwick St. Leonard, Fonthill Gifford, Hindon, Chicklade, Horningsham, Maiden Bradley, Kilmington, Stourton, Mere, Kingston Deverill, Brixton Deverill, Hill Deverill, Longbridge Deverill, Sutton Veny, East Knoyle, Mon(c)kton Deverill (missing years 1813-1816).  Also Wylye, Codford St. Mary, Alvediston, (these ones not drawn on map, but checked off on list). Also possibly Sedgehill.

Other Misc:  (including Bishop's Transcripts):  Hilperton, Boyton, Codford St. Mary, Sherrington, and Sedgehill.

Though East and West Knoyle, 2 parishes extremely close to Pertwood aren't available in SLC.  I know the records exist, because I looked at them in in a catalog in the Wiltshire County Records Office in Trowbridge.  These two parishes need to be checked for Thomas Gray and Mary.  I wonder if it may be the wrong couple there.

-- Look for a family bible.  Since James was older than John, perhaps it would be in James' family in England.  Try to find the descendants of James there.  It would be tough.

-- Did this family have any other children anywhere else?  This might be a worthy check, though IGI parent checks in 1995 yielded nothing.  Filter to Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset especially.  They seem old enough to have been married even as early as 1806.  She seems to be six years his senior.  These ages were calculated from burial dates, though hers was obviously messed up (see her notes).  It may be necessary to make a more careful check. Check marriage 1806-1816, at least.

-- The kids would have been, at the oldest, 16, 14, 14, and 9 years old, at their last parent's death.  They would all have been juveniles.  In England, there were likely no guardian records; they probably just went to a relative and lived there.  Possibilities would be grandparents, uncles or aunts.  Later on, James and John end up in Newton St. Loe and Corston, Somerset, respectively.  This might be an indication that the entire family was in this area of Somerset.  Also, John's possible "twin," Joseph, died in East Knoyle, Wilts, in 1835.  They may have all lived with a relative in East Knoyle.  If so, the only record of them there might be marriage records.  Since the couple was usually married in the woman's parish, Ann might be the only one married in West Knoyle.  If the 1881 ever gets computerized and Ann ever lived long enough, she might be found there.  Her two surviving brothers seemed to live to a good old age.  Other church records besides marriage would not be available to us.

-- See if someone you know can go check in Trowbridge on this Thomas GRAY's marriage to Mary in some of the parishes we don't have access to here.  Maybe Susan Paul in Westbury could do that.  If not, it may be possible to have Headley Burridge do it (that may be even closer, since he is right there in Trowbridge).  Have them check Zeals, East Knoyle, West Knoyle, and Mere.  Under MOVING PATTERNS, also see note that starts, "In order to get..."

LINKS:
-- There is one other Thomas GRAY born in the vicinity in another parish, but he didn't fall within the range of the calculated birthdate, as this one did. He could still be the one also.  This link not 100% sure, but of the thirty surrounding parishes, the only Thomas GREY found who was born exactly within the correct time period (calculated from death age), came from Hill Deverill parish.  There is one other parish, even closer to Pertwood, with many GREY's, Berwick St. Leonard's, but records are poor there, and I may have missed somthing or the years themselves may have been missing.  The records of these 30 parishes were original Wiltshire County parish records from County Records Office, Trowbridge, Wiltshire.  Towns searched for his birth were:

TOWNS SEARCHED FOR BIRTH/MARRIAGE:

Pertwood, Chicklade, Hindon, West Knoyle (2), E. Knoyle, Tisbury (Grays), Salisbury St. Edmund (no Grays), Warminster St. Denys, Warminster, Bishopstrow, Norton Bavant, Mere (Grays), Sutton Veny, Longbridge Deverill (Thomas, son of Edwards and Susannah Gray, born 21 May 1786 - this one is slightly off, i.e. about 1 mo. outside of possible calcualted range - could be good) (no marriages found), Hill Deverill (Grays) (Thomas born of James and Grace Gray b. 21 Dec 1786) and Chr 8 Jul 1787) (no existing marriage records 1812-1818), Brixton Deverill, Kingston Deverill, Mon(c)kton Deverill, Berwick St. Leonard, Berwick St. James, Fonthill Gifford (Grays) ( marriages only), Boyton, Heytesbury (marriages only), Sherrington (no Grays), Stockton (no Grays), Chilmark (book, not microfiche, not listed, go to original records), Zeals (Mere) (after 1840), Sedgehill (no Grays).

-- Found his supposed marriage on the IGI.  This needs to be verified in the records.  It seems likely, since it is probably the only Thomas GRAY married to a Mary in the area and at the right time (The rest of Warminster was NOT checked; this was just found on IGI).  Only problem is her birth compared to the known info for this man's actual wife.  See her notes for the confusing story on her birthdate.

MOVING PATTERNS/IDEAS:
-- One other parish to check and I'm not sure if it has been checked yet, that is just full of Grey's is possibly Mere.  Just double-check.  I am still fairly confident that this is our line, however.  12 (microfiche?) pp of Grey's in Wiltshire census 1881, 8 from Dorset, 4.5? from Somerset.

-- In order to get an idea of where the GREY/GRAY names come from and to do work for them, I have extracted all of them from the 1851 census for southwest Wilts, part of north Dorset, and part of east Somerset.  The line I have extracted from in Wilts is pretty much as follows:  A line running from the northern borders of Corsely and Upton Scudamore eastward (excluding Edington, including Imber and Chittern), southward at Chitterne, eastward again at Fisherton de la Mere (excluding Waddington and Winterbourne Stoke), from there southward including Berwick St. James and Stapleford, excluding Wilsford, Woodford, Bemerton, Salisbury, (but INcluding Netherhampton), Stratford Tony, Martin, and Damerham, but inclusing all portions of sw Wilts. within those boundaries.  In Dorset, I extracted all parishes from Bourton on the north, going southeast to Ashmore along and everything in between near the border only (i.e., excluding East Stour, Stour Provost, Todber, Buckhorn Weston, Kington Magna, etc.).  In the southern part of that area only did I check parishes not bordering Wilts., namely Compton Abbas, Fontmell Magna, Sutton Waldron, Iverne Minster, East Orchard, Margaret Marsh, Farningham?, and West Orchard.  In Somerset, I checked parishes of Wincanton, Bruton, Pitcombe, Shepton Mantague, North Cheriton, Maperton, Corston, Saltford, and Stanton Prior.  In all of this area, the greatest concentration of GRAY's was in the Mere area.  East and West Knoyle are right there, too.  There is a good possibility that our Thomas GRAY and Mary could have been married right there in East Knoyle.  Besides Mere, the next-highest concentration of GRAY's is in Hill Deverill, Longbridge Deverill, West Knoyle, followed then by Ansty and Great Wishford.  Also have extracted from 1871 CENSUS West Knoyle, and from 1841 CENSUS:  Heytesbury, Hill Deverill, East Knoyle, and Fonthill Gifford.

BELOW HERE IS ANOTHER VERSION OF HIS NOTES.  IT SHOULD BE COMPARED WITH ALL INFORMATION ABOVE THIS POINT TO GET THE EXTRA INFORMATION IN IT THAT IS DEFINITELY IN IT.

CONFLICTING INFORMATION:

-- This might be the same one who died in Pertwood.  Our Mary's birth calculated from death is 1780/1781.  This one christened about 1785, so although could be ours (by reason of her being christened 4-5 years after birth), the vicar seemed to list the age of children christened quite a while after birth.

-- Death/Calculated Birth Information:  In burial information, the vicar wrote down death date as 8 Jul 1851, even though her death is listed, I believe, BETWEEN a person who died in 1830 and one who died in 1833.  Listed as 51 years old at death.  The most likely scenario is that the '1851' was probably a mix-up between her death age (1851) and the actual year (1831 or 2).  The burial would most likely have to have been either 1831 or 1832, but double-check the years.

-- Do we have the right Mary?  A Mary TUDGAY md a Thomas GREY at Bishopstone. By Salisbury, Wilts, SS:  13 Mar 1980 LANGE, extracted.  Another promising marriage is Mary BAKER  to Thomas GRAY in Saint Denys, Warminster, Wilts, England, done 10 Feb 1994 BOISE (no info on submitter).  Try AF for this person.  If can connect with them, this would be excellent.  Mary BAKER was born 27 Jul 1785 in St. Denys, Warminster, Wiltshire, England.

-- Big difference in supposed birth in Warminster ('85) & reported age at death ('80-81).  However, it would put a slightly more reasonable age difference down between her and her husband.

-- Who was supposed to be the informant at her death with her husband dead already, to report age?  If her children or some other non-family member, they almost certainly estimated wrong.

SOURCES SEARCHED:

-- Searched 40 parishes near Pertwood to find any Thomas GREY/GRAY's married to a Mary, and this Mary BAKER is the only one I could come up with.

-- To link the Mary BAKER married to a Thomas GRAY in this parish to a child born in the same parish, I tried to determine if there were any Mary BAKER's born in this parish.  I checked the parish fairly carfully, and found one.  As far as other BAKER families in the St. Denys parish, there were several, but none with a daughter Mary born between the years 1775 and 1795 (checked BTs), so this would be the only one, at least, that I could find.  There was one year not found on the BTs - 1778 - but the year WAS found on the PR transcripts, so I was able to cover the entire period.  The 27 Jul 1785 date is the christening date of the person I found, the only Mary BAKER born in this parish during this time, so the person born here is probably the same one that got married in the parish later on.  Work for this particular Mary was done 1994 Boise. Submitted by member (not listed who, though).

-- Ruling out the impossible:  I wanted to see if perhaps the Mary BAKER and Thomas GRAY married in St. Denys parish in Warminster had children after 1815 (which would be during the time that our Thomas and Mary were already having children in Pertwood).  If so, I could rule out this couple as the likely possibility.
RESULTS:  Checked 1815 and after in St. Denys.  Couldn't find any children in specified time period.

They had the following children.

IDEAS:
-- No other John SALMON was listed as christened in the Corston parish records within 20 years either side of this person, so, although not connected for a 100% certainty with record of a headstone (i.e., with other relatives buried with him), it seems fairly certain this is the person.

135. Flower THOMAS 1 was christened 2 on 22 Jul 1792 in Corston, Somerset, England, United Kingdom. Flower was sealed to her parents on 24 Mar 1992 in the Provo Utah temple. She was baptized on 16 Mar 1989 in the Provo Utah temple. She was endowed on 05 Aug 1989 in the Provo Utah temple. [Parents]

R E S E A R C H    L O G

IDEAS:
-- Two Flower THOMASs were born at about the same time in Corston parish, but this is the correct one with the correct parents because she is listed as being a widow, Flower SALMON, and living with one of her sisters, Mary THOMAS (unmarried), in the 1851 Census for Corston.  In the other SALMON family, I found no Mary as a sister.  In addition, the other Flower THOMAS would have only been 16 when her first child was christened, which is not as likely as this one, who would have been 25.

CONFLICT (minor):
-- Interestingly, Mary's age in the 1851 census is reported as either 51 or 56, putting her actual age off by either 14 years or nine years (her birth year is 1786).

COINCIDENCE (possibly need to merge another family with this one):
-- A Flower THOMAS in the misc PAF file has a husband, Mr. SALMON, and three kids, all about the same ages and same names as ours, so it could be that these are the same people, that those belong to us or vice-versa - probably more likely that they belong to us.  The child of the other Flower SALMON is a Mason.  The husband of this one is a Mason, so it is perhaps a bit more likely that it is ours (although, it is possible that the trade goes all through the family).  However, I think it is too much of a coincidance that the other Flower married a SALMON and had kids born with the same names and at the same time as our Flower.

They had the following children.

Hughes)Our earliest history on Maria Emily at age 15 in New Zealand  begins with her disembarkation at Nelson Haven on the 16th February 1842 along with her mother Mrs Mary Ann Maund,35 her elder sister Sarah Ann  17 and brothers Robert 13 and Alexander 9 .  Thomas 11  was listed as a passenger but according to  the shipping papers held at NZ Archives Wellington he is not shown so we must assume he was one of the many of the unfortunte children to die at sea. For history on the sailing of the "Lloyds"see "Landfall Nelson" by June E. Neale.
Following the death of her husband Benjamin Franklin in 1833  Marias' mother remarried in 1836 to Richard Maund who had sailed on 'Whitby' as one of a survey party 4-5 months ahead of the main body of immigrants.  Some months after there arrival they made there way to the Motuaka (Motueka) area and settled in the Moutere. Maria Emily was employed as  ladies help to Mrs Greenwood in Motueka.
John Brougham who had sailed on the "Martha Ridgeway"with his first wife Maria (Hughes) and two sons John and James had also settled in the same area. Maria died 3 years  after their arrival in 1845, and on the 2nd Feb 1847 John aged 35 married Maria Emily Franklin aged 21.
One can only wonder on the hardships these people endured starting out with very little in the way of home comforts and on land that at best could be described  of poor quality, and mostly of a swampy nature.
Maria must have been a popular and friendly person (as described by her son Thomas Godsall) as her home became a half-way house for travellers between Riwaka and Motueka. John ran the place as an Inn and according to records was unlicensed to sell liquor.-(---and so it began issue of Motueka Historical Society)
John and Maria had 5 sons and a daughter- Edward -Thomas Godsall- John Charles- Henry- Graham- and Emily Sarah. All these children attended the new school at Lower Moutere.
In later years Maria Emily became crippled after a gander had attacked her and she would spend her days making quilts.(see Ida Jessie Maria Fry recollections)
Maria Emily died on the  10 Oct 1893 and was buried  at St Thomas' church yard in Nelson.

-- Is there any way at all to find out if he came here from Norway?  There are Pasprotokol records under FHLC - Denmark, Soro, Slagelse - Emigration and immigration:

-- Also, check his son, Gunder Heinrich GUNDERSEN's records in New Zealand.  There might be something giving his history.  Gunder's picture is already in a book and there might be more on him.  Check archives, histories, funeral  Transcripts, obituaries, funeral home records, other books.
-- Other ideas:
-- Check them in military records, Odense Koebstad Skt. Hans Laegsruller 48, 49, 50, and Taarnborg and Slagelse earlier life.  Find other kids in censuses and parish records.  Look for kids and parent in differernt towns for Laegsruller.
-- Checked entire Norway census 1801.  Didn't find any kid with mother whose name was Thora.  Did find one (he was born 1798) whose mother's name was Tharan.  He was from Telemark, Sannikedal, Strand, census film 6,200,745, L-03#44.  Sex unknown. Also, a person who was with grandparents, no parents listed, enumerated in Buskerud, Nordrehough (Nordrehov), Schotland, FHL 6,200,774, K-03#30.  Grandparents were extremely old (70's and 80's).
-- Check to see in IGI if Tharan is Thora also.
-- Checked Taarnborg, Norre Lyndelse for Thor's military records, found nothing. Still need to check Odense, Skt. Hans and Slagelse.
-- Searched test version of IGI 22 Jul 2002, but didn't find anything -- SRE, 23 Jul 2002.

FROM WIKIPEDIA, http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iceland:  "In 1262 , Iceland became part of Norway . In 1814 it became part of Denmark . In the 19th century , many Icelanders wanted to be independent from Denmark. In 1918 , Iceland got many powers of its own, but the king of Denmark was still king of Iceland.".
FROM THIS, WE KNOW THAT IN 1801 WHEN THOR WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN BORN, ICELAND WAS PART OF NORWAY.  ALSO, FROM 1814 ON, IT WAS PART OF DENMARK.  COULD THIS BE WHY IT WAS SO EASY FOR HIM TO HAVE SHOWN UP IN DENMARK RECORDS, AND YET NOT APPEAR IN THE 1801 CENSUS OF NORWAY?

-- Searched all Thora, Thore, Tora, and Tore with only two results having a husband Gunder or Gunner, or anything close to it in the 1801 Norway online census:  https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/search/1801?fornavn=Tore&etternavn=&kjonn=k&familiestilling=&sivilstand=Gift&yrke=&fodselsaar=&alder=&ny_husholdning=&merknader=&bosted=&bydel=&gaardsnummer=&sort=rel.  The one from Krødsherad parish has been proven wrong.  Check Strand parish, Rogaland fylke (county) to see if you can find a Thor son born just after the census.  Check first in bygdebøkene, 948.31/S4 D2a v. 1+3, Strand sokn, Rogaland fylke, gård Helmigstøel, SRE, 3 Feb 2019.

Hi.

My name is Viggo Jensen, and I am a great great grand son of Anne Marie Baggesen.
I got from my grandmother a pedigree of The Baggesen family, beginning in Ribe 1574 and ending with Anne Maerie Baggesen and her brothers and sisters.
Anne Marie Baggesen lost her father Herman Baggesen, who was out of a much more important family, before she married the gardener Johan David Bahn, who died at my great grand mother, Caroline Amalie Bahn, who was married to Laurits Christian Marius Wendelboe in Odense.

Their children were:
Sofie Frederikke Bahn born 22.06 1836 i Frederiksdal, Lyngby Sogn, married 27.04 1878 in Gråbrødre Hospital Kirke to Niels Johan hendrik Stächler. I think they lived in Ringsted.

Hermine Benedicte Bahn, born 05.10 1837, Søløst, Gentofte Sogn

Johanne Christine Bahn born 1842? on the island Amager. I have not been able to find her

Marie Mathilde Bahn, born 14.05 1844, at the manor Belteberg in Ottarp Sogn, Skåne, Sweden

Lovise Andrea Bahn, born 1846? in Engeltofta, Barkåkra Sogn, Skåne, Sweden.

Caroline Amalie Bahn, born 26.10 1850 in Ulkendrup Mark, Lunde Sogn, Odense Amt (MY familily)

Johan Frederik Herman Bahn, born 14.06 1854 in Billehaven, Trøstrup-Korup Sogn. I do not know what happened to him.

5 years later Anne Marie Baggesen died, and the family mowed before 1860 to Sankt Hans Landsogn in the northern part of todays Odense

Hanne, married to a man, who lives in New Zealand, but they did not no his name.

Mathilde, married to Droscheholder (today we might say taxi-owner) Steen in Copenhagen

Andrea bahn unmarried, 44 years old

Caroline Amalie married to the man, who gave this informations.

Ships-carpenter Hermann Bahn, of whom they had no information for the last 10 years.

Kære Vigo!

Det er meget interessant!  Mange takk for informationen!

Mvh Viggo!

Du må skrive på dansk eller på engelsk.  Jeg taler dem begge to, men du ved jeg skriver dansk ikke så godt!  Jeg håper, at du har en glædelig jul!

Kære Shon.

Tusind tak for din mail.
Her bliver man ofte advaret mod facebook.

Viggo

I have just passed this on to another person - I wondered if you had it -- this is why I know that the story about the family going to England staying there a couple of years to learn to speak English and then leaving England to come to New Zealand is just a story -
