IDEAS:
-- Corston parish records, SRO, Taunton, Somerset.  This person's last name could possibly Seldon/Selden/Sildon.  The first time the name comes into the family as middle name in this person's child's (Flower) child, Mary Ann Sildon SALMON (born 1817), and continues down until the present time on certain lines.  This middle name could be a last name, especially from a maternal line.  Mary Ann's paternal grandparents' names are SALMON and DANCY. Her maternal grandfather is THOMAS, but maternal grandmother's (this person), surname unknown.  It is highly likely that either this person's name could be SELDEN or that it be a surname further back on her lines.

-- Sent £25.00 to the SDFHS (Somerset & Dorset Family History Society) to have them do a small amount of research.  They were able to find the Selden, where ours logically fell, i.e.,. in the generation before which it couldn't be found in children's names any more, which would logially be this Mary married to William Thomas, est. marriage year 1782.  Sure enough!!!!  There was indeed a Mary Selden who married to a William Thomas, and just one month after 1782 (27 Jan 1783), which would give them just enough time to have their first child.  This MUST be our person; there is pretty much no doubt, SRE, 28 May 2015.

-- Found this family on the IGI today.  Unfortunately, the exact birth place cannot be found on any of the entries, only exact birth dates.  So someone has supposedly found these records, but just neglected to add the full locality.  Name of submitter not available.  Note that the surname of the father is the same as that of the children.  Check this time period against the time the Danish government tried to change from patronymics to fixed surnames.  Also, since we have both this person's names now, it's possible to search the church record indexes in Copenhagen for the records.  Also, since we have an exact birth for his daughter, Anne Marie, it will be possible to quickly check each parish, in order to find her.  Hopefully, she is in fact in Copenhagen, and not elsewhere.  Submitter definitely meant for this to be our person, as there is a record of her connection to Johan David Bahn also in IGI.  In other entry for this family in IGI, Herman is listed with death date and apparently calculated birth date.  I have found others in FamilySearch with by this name and with this approximate birth date.  Interestingly, the estimated marriage date for Herman and Kirstine is 1789.  Did they marry and have children elsewhere?  Wills could be checked for Copenhagen.  Also, do a wider search.  Check DDD, both for Copenhagen county and elsewhere, SRE, 4 Nov 2003.
-- Have checked the DDD (Dansk Demografisk Database), and found one entry of a person from Copenhagen of that name and age; looks very promising:  http://ddd.dda.dk/asp/husstand_uk.asp?amt=K%F8benhavn&herred=K%F8benhavn+%28Staden%29&enhed=Rosenborg+Kvarter&stednavn=&matr_nr_adresse=Sankt+Gjertruds+Str%E6de+89&matrikel=&kilde=FT-1787&indtastningsnr=B5769&husstands_familienr=4:  All persons in the household:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Isted:

The Battle of Isted (Danish: Slaget på Isted Hede; German: Die Schlacht bei Idstedt) took place on 25 July 1850 near the village of Idstedt (Danish: Isted), in what is today Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The battle was part of the First Schleswig War.[2]

The battle began early in the morning at around 2:00 and lasted until 19:00. The Danish took 1,072 unwounded and 411 wounded prisoners. The Danish victory failed to break the Schleswig-Holsteinian army and the war continued until 1851.[3]

The Isted Lion commemorates the battle, which was at its time the largest in Scandinavian history. The battle's anniversary, 25 July, is a military flag day in Denmark.[4]

N. F. S. Grundtvig's song "Det var en sommermorgen" ("It was a summer morning") touches on the battle of Isted.[3]

Background
As a result of pressure from the major European powers, Schleswig-Holstein stood alone in the summer of 1850. The Danish High Command had no overall plan for the coming campaign in 1850, but during July a number of reports were received that the Schleswig-Holstein army had taken up positions north of the town of Schleswig. The Danish High Command now saw a chance to defeat the rebels in a last, decisive battle. Just like the Danes, the Schleswig-Holstein High Command hoped to lure the Danish army into giving battle at Isted and being defeated. The two armies were in many respects equal. Though the Danish army was considerably larger, the Schleswig-Holstein army held a strong defensive position.[1]

Battle
The battle began early in the morning of 24 July, when the Danish vanguard clashed with the Schleswig-Holsteinian outposts and pickets. During the day, the Schleswig-Holsteinian troops were pushed back all along the line. The fighting of the day climaxed in a larger engagement at the Helligbæk (a stream) that involved substantial forces on both sides.[1]

The battle proper began on the night of 24 July when the Danish main force attacked. During the early morning hours of 25 July, fighting raged back and forth at several places, including by Bøgmose, north of Isted Lake, as well as Grydeskov between Isted Lake and Langsø. To the east, between Bøglund and Nørre Farensted, Danish troops pushed back the Schleswig-Holsteinian troops, who then fell back and took up position at Vedelspang.[1]

About this time, the weather dramatically changed. The previous days of warm weather, was suddenly replaced by heavy mist and pouring rain, which made it almost impossible for the officers on both sides to maintain an overview of the battlefield and their forces. At 5 AM, the Schleswig-Holstein army took the initiative and two brigades counter-attacked the Danish troops at the village of Stolk and, around 6 AM, against the Danes in Isted city. At Stolk the Danish forces were pushed back in disarray and during the frenzied fighting, Danish General F. A. Schleppegrell fell. After their success at Stolk, the Schleswig-Holsteinian army continued their advance and attacked Isted town. The fighting soon devolved into house to house fighting. The Danish Division Reserve were sent forward, and around 7:45 AM the Danish forces managed to first stop, and then counter attack the Schleswig-Holsteinians. During the fighting the Danish Colonel Baggesen sent a series of alarming messages to General Krogh and his staff, which caused General Krogh to cancel an ongoing flanking maneuver west of the battlefield. By chance, the Schleswig-Holsteinian army had escaped an attack that would have surprised their troops at a critical time.[1]

Around noon, General Krogh ordered a general advance. The Danish infantry attacked without support of the cavalry and without preliminary fire from the artillery. Despite this, the timing of the attack was fortunate. As the attack began, the Schleswig-Holsteinian artillery was being withdrawn from their current positions, preventing them from firing on the advancing Danes. Around 14:15 PM, General Krogh ordered a cavalry brigade forward to attack the enemy in the center.[1] The fierce fighting was described by William Howard Russel, correspondent for The Times:[5]

To the extreme left, also, the Danes were repulsed and driven to a considerable distance northward, and as the Holstein tirailleurs were evidently advancing, while the fire from the Danish center had abated, sanguine hopes were entertained of the result. But they were premature. The Danes advanced again, and the battle raged with more fury than ever, the artillery in the plain on all points firing incessantly. The roar of the heavier cannon, and the rush and hiss of the balls through the air, were the only sounds that fell on the ear; the irregular firing of the Riflemen and infantry was like the rattle of a toy compared to the clash of an enormous steam engine.

— William Howard Russel, The Times, 30 July 1850
The firing was now heavier than ever, and at last the Schleswig-Holsteinian center gave way and retreated towards Schleswig: the right wing bent back and retired towards the town while the left fell back through the open ground to the west. At the time of the Danish cavalry attack at 2.15 PM, the Schleswig-Holstein army was in full retreat, but they were not molested for long during their retreat[5] as the cavalry pursuing them south of Husby, inexplicably and suddenly, retreated after only a minor skirmish. Despite the withdrawal of the cavalry brigade the Danish advance continued. By late afternoon the Danes reached Skovby and the town of Schleswig, which was quickly occupied while the Schleswig-Holstein army retreated, ending the battle.[1]

Aftermath
The Danish victory at Isted had not been the decisive victory the Danish High Command had hoped it would be and Danish losses exceeded those of Schleswig-Holstein. While defeated, the Schleswig-Holsteinian army had escaped to fight another day and the war continued. In September the Schleswig-Holsteinians launched an attack at Mysunde, which was repulsed by the Danes. In October, the Danes managed to thwart the siege of Frederiksstad, but again failed to defeat the Schleswig-Holsteinians. The war then entered a lull until January 1851, when the Great Powers finally pressured both sides to end the war, and the Provisional Schleswig-Holstein government and its army disbanded.[1]

The course of the battle was largely affected by the difficult weather conditions, during which the battle was fought. Still, senior officers on both sides have since been criticized for their actions during the battle. On the Danish side these were Colonel Baggesen and General Flindt. Baggesen was criticized for his frantic messages to the army commander after the death of General Schleppegrell, which caused the flanking attack that could have secured a major victory to be called off. Flindt, commander of the cavalry brigade, was criticized for half-hearted pursuit of the Schleswig-Holstein army after the noon attack. Had he pursued with greater vigor, the enemy could have suffered considerable losses. These criticisms, however, are likely based on a good deal of hindsight. Overall, the determining factor in the Danish victory was the superiority of the Danish infantry in morale and training.[1]

The Battle of Isted was the largest in the history of the Nordic countries until the Winter War of 1939-1940. In the years after the First Schleswig War, Isted became a symbol of the Danish victory. In memory of the battle the famous Isted Lion was erected on the cemetery of Flensburg where many of the fallen soldiers were buried.[1]

Slaget ved Isted, 25. juli 1850
Artikler
Her vandt danskerne en smal sejr.

Ved bl.a.

Schleppegrell, faldt.

Herefter gik krigshandlingerne i stå.

Da Sol stod op i Øster,
den næppe var at se,
og alle Fuglerøster,
i Struben kvaltes de.

Det var paa Isted Hede
og saa i Øvre-Stolk,
for gamle Danmarks Ære
da stred det danske Folk,
ja, for den danske Tunge
og for det danske Land
stred Heltene de unge
som gamle Hildetan!

Dér faldt den gamle Nordmand,
den djærve Schleppegrell,
han regned mer ej Kugler,
end Hagl det haarde Fjeld!
Dér faldt den bolde Læssøe
i Helte-Manddoms-Aar,
og for den danske Løve
det var et Hjertesaar!

Der faldt i Ungdoms Blomster
saa mangen modig Svend,
at Tysken tror det næppe,
vi mange har igen.
Dog synger danske Drenge,
de slaar i Vænget Top:
som Blomsterne i Enge
hvert Aar de vokser op!

Tak være danske Piger,
som græde nu i Løn
for Broder og for Bejler,
som Moder for en Søn!
de holdt dem ej tilbage
med bange Suk og Graad,
men sang for dem med Brage:
Vaagn op til Heltedaad!

Guds Fred med vore Døde
i Danmarks Rosengaard!
Guds Fred med dem, som bløde
af dybe Hjertesaar!
vor Kærlighed med alle,
de store og de smaa,
som ville staa og falde
med Løven askegraa!

Gud gav en herlig Sejer
den lange Sommerdag,
fra Morgengry til Middag
det tordned Slag i Slag,
men da i Middagsstedet
man saa den gyldne Sol,
da vundet var Guldsædet
til Danmarks Dronningstol!

Fra Als til Danevirke,
fra Sli til Ægirs Dør
skal Danmarks Løver springe
paa Gyldengrund som før.
Hos Angler og hos Friser
i genfødt Vennelag
skal synges Kæmpeviser
om Sejrens Julidag!

Og hver Gang Danmark græder
Guldtaarer med Guldklang,
og hver Gang Øjet perler
ved liflig Vemodssang,
da hvælve Rosentelte
dem selv ved Havets Bred,
hvor Danmarks Julihelte
fik deres Lejested!
