Folkungaätten sägs härstamma från Folke den tjocke.

Folkungaätten, medeltida stormannaätt, av vilken endast ett fåtal medlemmar tillhörde folkungarnas parti. Ätten konstruerades i efterhand av bl.a. Olaus Petri, och dit fördes medlemmar ur vitt skilda släkter.

Ätten sägs härstamma från Folke "den tjocke", "den digre", (1100-talet), vars mytiske farfar skulle ha varit Folke Filbyter. Bland medlemmarna märks jarlen Birger Brosa (död 1202), vars son Filip Birgersson (död 1200) blev jarl i Norge. Birger Brosa sägs också ha haft sonen Folke Jarl, ledare för folkungapartiet, samt bröderna Karl Jarl (död 1220) och Magnus Månesköld. Den sistnämnde hade flera framstående söner, bl.a. Birger Jarl. Dennes son Valdemar valdes till svensk kung 1250, och genom brodern Magnus Ladulås, dennes son Birger Magnusson och sonson Magnus Eriksson stannade tronen inom ätten till 1364.

Det mest använda Folkungavapnet var ett lejon över tre bjälkar, som nu ingår i Sveriges riksvapen.
