OCCUPATION:  Soldier and yearnweaver.

NOTES/LOG:
-- There is another child, Michael Friedrich Itzholtz who may be this person's descendant in the St. Nikolai birth index - SRE 1997?
-- Tried looking for #1 marriage (even though not in index) in Skt. Nikolai on FHL 1,271,034 (rechts) and 1,271,035 (links) from Feb 1726 back to 1722 incl.  Nix - SRE 1997?
-- Did find him in Spandau under Elsholtz (Berlin Brgerbuch showed Elsholz surname in Spandau), instead of Itzholtz, as was in his marriage records.  It was the only Michael Fridrich, with a father Michael - SRE Apr 2000?
-- Found him in "Der Spandauer Bürgerbuch von 1600 bis 1734 und die Spandauer Neubürgerliste von 1579 bis 1596" and  "Bürger- und Einwohnerkataster der Stadt Spandau von 1723."  Mentioned much information about him, including his military company and regiment.  He owned property in Spandau that his mother-in-law lived in - SRE 22 Dec 2000.
-- Checked Garnisongemeinde church in Spandau for children from 1719-1731 inclusive.  Found nothing - SRE 30 Dec 2000.
-- Checked "Berliner Kunsthandwerder vom 15. bis 20. Jahrhundert" for Itzholtz/Elßholtz/Ytzholtz and found nothing - SRE 30 Dec 2000.
-- Checked index to "Testamentsakten, 1685-1891" (Spandau (Brandenburg). Amtsgericht), wills for Spandau 1685-1891, FHL 578047.  Found several entries for Elsholz:  p. 59 Lfd. Nr. 9; p. 61 Lfd. Nr. 29; p. 61 Lfd. Nr. 30; p. 61 Lfd. Nr. 31; p. 67 Lfd. Nr. 84.  Check these out to see if they belong to us - SRE 30 Dec 2000.
-- May also be necessary to check Berlin wills. Not certain if these are included in the above note, begining "Checked index to "Testamentsakten...".  If not, it may be possible to find many Spandau wills now listed in Berlin - SRE 7 Jan 2001.
-- It is very important to check Spandau birth records for the Michael Friedrich Itzholtz born in 1723, as is mentioned in marriage notes above (also check under Elßholtz and Ytzholtz), which may be this person's son.  The Spandau Bürgerbuch mentions that he had a son of 3 years of age in 1726, so this is very likely the person.  Also check Spandau for other children born between 1719 and 1726.  Check under alternate surname spellings.  It would be unusual if they had no children for the first seven years of marriage, then had many.  They may be in another locality - SRE 1 Jan 2001.
-- Checked for other children in Spandau.  Index was messed up somewhat, but they were there.  They begin right after the marriage of this couple.  Birth of Michael Friedrich ITZHOLTZ born in 1723 was also found as a child - SRE 2 Jan 2001.
-- There is some confusion here on who Michael Fridrich ELSHOLTZ was married to.  The indexer to St. Nikolai births was also somewhat confused.  We know that MFI II died in 1738, however (in MFI III's marriage record, it refers to his father as MFI Garnweber (both were yarnweavers), deceased, so subsequent marriages must have been those of MFI III and not MFI II).  Information has now been straightened out in database.  MFI III died in 1738, so he could not have had kids born after that.  Kids born to those marriages (and the marriages themselve) must be ascribed to his son MFI IV - SRE 7 Jan 2001.
-- I reverified the names of MFI IV's two familes tonight in the records, and everything looks good - SRE 12 Jan 2001.

Maria Elisabeth DITERICHIN [Parents] 1 was born on 05 Jan 1702 in St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Preußen,Deutschland. B  Son's marriage record.

OCCUPATION:  Soldier: Musquetier unter des Herrn Obristleutnant von Be/olow's Compagnie = musketeer under Lieutenant Colonel von Be/olow's company (from marriage record).  Also, from son's Bürgerbuch entry in 1726 (from Spandauer Bürgerbuch, 1600-1734), says this person was a "former soldier from Schwendy Regiment".

LOCALITY:
-- Peitz was formerly located in the Markgrafschaft of Nieder-Lausitz (Lower Lusatia), Kingdom of Saxony.  In 1815, the Congress of Vienna stipulated that portions of Saxony be given to Preußen (Prussia), and became the Sachsen Provinz of Preußen.  Peitz was in one of these areas.  In 1691, at the time of this person's marriage, Peitz was located in Sachsen, not Brandenburg.
-- From this person's marrige entry, there is some question as to whether this might actually be Zeitz in Sachsen, and not Peitz - SRE, 21 May 2003.
-- NOTE THAT PEITZ IS MOST LIKELY NOT THE PROPER LOCALITY, BUT RATHER ZEITZ.   THIS IS PRETTY DEFINITE, UPON CLOSE PERUSAL OF THE RECORDS.  I AND SEVERAL OTHERS IN THE FHL HAVE LOOKED AT THIS OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL HOURS, AND ZEITZ SEEMS THE MOST LIKELY POSSIBILITY -- SRE, 2 June 2003.

NOTES/LOG:
-- There is possibly an Itzholtz: p. 332 rechts FHL 1,270,672, bottom of page, Joachim Itzotz, 1658.  This is not sure.  It could be a connection between these.  Perhaps look for this man's son, even though not in records. another p. 324 links? - SRE 1997?.
-- Berlin Bürgerbuch says that ELßHOLTZ is a prominent surname in Spandau.  Sounds like ITZHOLTZ.  Must be the same.  Check marriage records under this surname in index for St. Nikolai to see if can find it under that  - SRE Apr 2000.
-- Found his marriage record under Elßholtz!  His father (and therefore, he?) is apparently from Peitz in Sachsen.  He may have had further children.  Check military records, perhaps - Apr 2000.
-- Have written to Peitz to have this person's birth and his father's marriage searched - Oct 2000.
-- Checked index for St. Nikolai again.  It was more clear this time (though the indexer was a bit confused with all the Michael Itzholtz/Elsholtz's also) that this person has more children there, which have now been added into database - SRE 7 Jan 2001.
-- Check for missing children.  There are gaps between 1691-1695 and 1695-1702.  Martin (Arbeiter), who was a witness in one of nephews or neices (through his brother, Michael Fridrich), is surely a child of this person. He was also having children beginning in the 1730's.  Check both in St Nikolai and Garnison - SRE 7 Jan 2001.
-- CHECK MILITARY RECORDS.  Find out where the military records are for Peitz.  Check any military church records, if extant.  Work with Steve Blodgett on ideas.  Hopefully we can even get out of Peitz and into another locality where records still exist -- SRE 11 May 2002.

OCCUPATION: He is listed as a Trumpeteer in marriage, later as a Private.  The trumpeteer entry showed him as being under General Wachtmeister von Barfuss.

NOTES/LOG:
-- LINK:  His father is Juergen DIEDERICH, but his mother is not for sure Elisabeth METZELTS.  TRY LOOKING IN THE LOCAL MILITARY PARISH RECORDS, LIKE GARNISON PARISH RECS OR SOMETHING, FOR HIS BIRTH.  IT COULD BE HE WAS INDEED BORN TO JUERGEN AND ELISABETH, JUST IN ANOTHER NEARBY PARISH.  ALSO CHECK ALLLLLL RECORDS FROM THE BEGINNING ON, EVEN DEATH, TO TRY TO FIND ALL INFORMATION ON ALL THESE SPANDAU LINES; THERE IS PROBABLY STUFF YOU ARE MISSING.  CLEAN IT OUT!!!  THIS COULD TAKE A COUPLE OF YEARS.

NOTES/LOG:
-- SHE IS LISTED AS MARIA IN HER MARRIAGE RECORDS AND HER CHILDRENS' BIRTH RECORDS, BUT SHE IS LISTED AS ANNA MARIA IN HER OWN BIRTH RECORDS.  I AM FAIRLY SURE THIS IS CORRECT, BUT STILL CHECK FOR OTHER MARIA'S.
-- SEARCHES ON DAMEß FAMILY:
-- SEARCHED:
-- Births from 1655 to p. 376 (links).
-- Marriages (links and rechts) from mid-1653 (p. 56 links, p. 55 rechts) back to p. 33 (rechts) and p. 32 (links).
-- Marriages p. from these same pp. 33 and 32 back to the beginning of the film (1640) for HUSBAND'S LAST NAME ONLY, a very quick search.
-- TO SEARCH (SPANDAU):  (Packets marked in red letters A, B, and C still have some things to be recorded and/or photocopied!)
-- (leave alone for now?) Births 1642-1652 (rechts (1,270,671) and links (1,270,672)). (this was probably searched and not noted!!!). There is a note that  1,270,672 was searched up to p. 265 (probabl 1654), so this is probably OK.  Also, I think I remember, going back on both links and rechts from to find earlier children of this person's father and couldn't find anything quite a while back.
-- Births (links) from 1660 onward (starting p. 376 (448!!!). (NOTE 7-24-98: APPARENTLY, THIS WAS AT LEAST CHECKED TO P. 448 AT SOME POINT, since this person's brother, Christophorus, was found there.  Also, this was checked yesterday quickly from 1660 to p. 440 (beg. of 1664).  So bag from 376 to 448.
-- Births (rechts) from 1655 (p. 439 actually!!!!!!!!1) onward. (NOTE 7-24-98: This was checked quickly yesterday from 1660 to p. 439 (beg. of 1664), so start 439.
-- Marriages (earliest film, beginning 1640) before p. 32 (links) and 33 (rechts) for WIFE'S LAST NAME DAMEß (see above in "Searched.").
-- Marriages after p. 56 (links) and p. 55 (rechts).
-- On marriages, 1655 (when the wife's name first appears on the record, as well as the husband's) to 1660 (when I started looking), need to check the woman's name ONLY, to see if a female DAMEß got married in those years).
-- Also, some "re"-searching needs to be done to look for Bellin(s) surname people.  Was checking 1,270,671 and on p. 286 and 365 (both rechts) found Elisabeth BELLIN, dau. of Hanns, chr 21 oct 1656 (p. 286 rechts) and on p. 365 (rechts) Sophia, chr. 19 Jan 1660, dau. of Hans Bellin and Catarina Albrecht.  Hans BELLIN(S) is probably a brother of Maria BELLINS, Mathias DAMES' wife.
-- SEE FATHER'S NOTES.  MAY BE ABLE TO FIND HER IN SPANDAU.  SHE PROBABLY HAS A BROTHER B 1652.  I LOOKED FORWARD FOR HER FROM 1652 on (actually SEARACHED from 1642, but wasn't looking for Dames, but rather Martin DIETERICH) to end of 1654 on FHL 1,270,671 and 1,270,672.  I actually went forward on FHL 1,270,672 into 1655 (to p. 265), and found more Dames kids!  Go forward on both films from here as far as possible, look for the marriages of the Hans and Mathias Dames families (see if they're brothers.  Perhaps Hans and Mathias also are in birth records, as they are having kids at the same time.  Also, possibly go back, as well, for missed Dames kids for 1651 and back. Also need to look for Juergen dieterich here.
-- damess more often written Dames or Dameß.  Found numerous occurrences in Brandenburg, esp. Berlin.  She really might come from there.  ALSO, NUMEROUS OCCURRENCES OF THIS NAME IN SPANDAU WILLS.  CHECK THE SKT. JOHANNES PARISH FOR HER BIRTH. THIS MAY BE THE NEXT BEST BET.  BERLIN MIGHT ALSO BE GOOD.
-- Searched for her marriage to Deusen from 1686 when she married the other man back to 1680 in Skt. Nikolai, Spandau.  Found nix. Tried to find her having kids with Deusen.  Searched rechts on 1,270,673 back before her marriage in 1686 with her second husband to 736 (not links yet, however).  Check Deusen's death first.  That will give you an idea as to her age.  Check Mike Itzholtz, too, for birth before 1689 (before indexing) on links, but that would put him and his wife at least 13 years or more apart. This is probably unlikely.  Tried Diedrich Deusen's death from 1682-1686 incl. Couldn't find a thing (links or rechts).
-- A Damess? on p. 281 links FHL 1,270,672? not sure.
-- Checked the Spandau Amtsgericht, Testamentsakten 1685-1891 (wills recorded at Spandau, Germany.  Numbers 1-3410 are for years from 1685-1862 and are not chronologically arrangd.  They are indexed.  Index is FHL 578,047:  Damess:  pg 48, lfd. nr. 11; 49,18; 49,22; 50,26; 50,31; 51,38; 53,60; 54,67; 56,83; 57,93; 57,97; 58;102.  Films back 18 Feb.  This is very messed up.  I found Dames on film 1 and 2.  1 and 2 are d's, part of 2, 3, and 4 are r's, end of 4 is h's.  Perhaps the first number is the will #, but I found them on film 1, which is 1-32.  This makes no sense at all, so look at Provo film or order both index in SLC and other films.

OCCUPATION: He is listed as having served in the military under General Lieutenant von Schoening's company.

NOTE:  Posssible child on FHL 1,270,672 p. 12 links bottom, Jergen, bap 1 Oct 1742, but looks like his father is Juergen Tiderich or Tederich, no mother mentioned.  Wanted to check for his son's birth in military parish records, garnison.

NOTE:  Checked for this man as father to Martin or other kids on FHL 1,270,672 (left side (links)) went forward to p. 265 (end of 1654), from beginning of film (1642).  On 1,270,671 (right side (rechts)) went from beginning of film (1642) to end of 1654 also. Elisabeth METZELT [Parents] 1 was born 2 about 1616 in of, Würzen, , ,Deutschland. Elisabeth married 2, 3 Jürgen DIEDERICH on 25 Aug 1641 in St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Deutschland.

Other marriages:
FRITZEN, Joachim

NOTES:
-- Found this in the OI (IGI) submitted by someone in Germany.  Might be ours, since there probably aren't too many Juergen DIETERICHs floating around this town and getting married at just this time (and in the same parish as I have been)?  Check METZELTS out for frequency (which parish in Spandau it occurs most).  Couldn't find any METZELTSs in OI main file or '97 addendum at all.

Couldn't find the locality Wuerzen anywhere in Brandenburg in gazeteers in SLC.  Attendant there said I should try looking for this woman's former husband's death in the same parish earlier.

They had the following children.

M i Martin DIEDERICH was born about 1652.

Dieterich DEUSS 1 was born on 26 Mar 1661 in St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Deutschland. He died before 04 Jan 1686. Dieterich married 2 Anna Maria DAMEß about 1681 in of, St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg,Deutschland.

Dieterich worked as Soldier.

B  His birth is probably the one found on FHL 1,270,672, p. 390 (links) in Skt. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Preussen, Germany parish records.  It is only circumstantial, but his approximated birth year was 1660 and this is 1661.  No other occurrences of Deuss/Deusen were found in the records.
D  According to his wife's second marriage in FHL 1,270,673, p. 343.

NOTES/LOG:
-- HIS PARENTS ARE NOT 100% SURE!!
-- Found his wife, Anna Maria Dameß, in "Der Bürger- und Einwohnerkataster der Stadt Spandau von 1723, p. 258."  She was listed as "Maria Druses [this person's surname], Martin Dietrich's widow."  See her for further information.
-- There IS a Dieterich Deuss having kids in 1660s.  See  FHL 1,270,671, p. 443 rechts.  Dieterich Deuss, Muskquetierer, wife Anna Noyling, daughter Dorothea 4 Feb 1664.

Anna Maria DAMEß [Parents] 1, 2 was christened 3 on 12 Nov 1656 in St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Deutschland. Anna married 4 Dieterich DEUSS about 1681 in of, St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg,Deutschland.

Other marriages:
DIEDERICH, Martin

B  Children's birth records.  Her maiden name comes only from one record so far:  her son, Johann Christoph's birth record.
M  Skt. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg, Prussia parish records, FHL 1,270,673, p. 343, rechts.

Mathias DAMES [Parents] 1 was born 2, 3, 4 about 1626 in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Deutschland. Mathias married 5 Maria BELLIN on 23 May 1652 in St. Nikola Parish Church, St. Nikolai, Spandau, Brandenburg,Deutschland.

Mathias worked as Töpfer (Potter), Soldat (Soldier).

OCCUPATION:  Soldier, potter.

LOG/NOTES:
-- Sent a letter to the Evangelische Kirche in Potsdam on 7 Dec 1998.  Never received a reply.
-- Possibly found him in a Spandau Bürgerbuch.  The person mentioned as a potter in the Bürgerbuch in 1653 could easily be the soldier having children beginning 1653.  This should be checked out more thoroughly.  Check all children's births and other applicable records to see if a potter is mentioned.  The most interesting piece of information is that he was born in Potsdam, just as our person's father (from this person's marriage entry) was supposed to have been from Potsdam. This clearly indicates that this person could have been born in Potsdam. Time for receiving citizenship also fits well into the scenario - SRE 1 Jan 2001.
-- Have searched for birth for this person.  For history of info, see father's notes.
-- Re-checked his marriage record, this time more carefully, and it was more apparent.  He was listed as a "citizen and potter in Berlin," and that his father, Andreas, was from Potsdam.  Since the Spandau Bürgerbuch basically gives almost the same information, he must be the one - SRE 9 Feb 2001.
-- Original calculated date was abt 1627.  We have a birth entry from Domstiftarchiv Brandenburg.  They say "Matthias Dames ist ein Söhnlein gebohren den 25 martij, getaufft den 30 ejusd....genannt Matthias die Pathen waren Andreas Schultetu. Gerogius Francus. Samul Senstiu.  Lorenz Biering. Urbenkrilen, fraw. Jacob Schultzin.
