NEW ZEALAND lost one of its foremost grasslands scientists on Sunday with the sudden death of Palmers ton North's Ray Brougham.
 Dr Brougham was renown internationally for his work in developing and maintaining pastures. He died, aged 67, while taking one of his regular walks through the city. He had a history of heart trouble.
  Dr Brougham was born in 1926 and educated at Palmerston north Boy's High School. He was clerk at the local power board in 1945. then a chance encounter with DSIR Grasslands director Bruce Levy gave him a job as a casual labourer. By February 1946, he was appointed a cadet technical assistant. The following year , he was given leave to study for a BSc at the University of Canterbury, where he graduated in 1950.
 During the 1950s and 1960s, Dr Brougham researched pasture establishment, particularly grazing management .One of his discoveries one the harmful effect of overgrazing white clover in summer.
 Dr Brougham was appointed chief pasture ecologist at grasslands in 1961 and awarded a DSc by the University of Canterbury in 1963 for his work in pasture ecology.
 During his research career, Dr Brougham published 100 scientific and technical papers, including 15 contributions,many as plenary papers, at international conferences.
 But he was no dry academic, and spent many hours with farm discussion groups at conferences and with industry, talking about the practical implications of his work and devising way to apply research results`.
 Dr Brougham became director of DSIR Grasslands in 1971, a position he held until he retired in 1986. He is credited with greatly in\improving the quality of the divisions scientific work and resources, boosting its international reputation.
 He developed major field research facilities on lowland at Aorangi and hill  country at Ballantrae and expanded the network of regional stations.
 He began international  collaboration in grassland research with several tours during the 1950s and 60s. As Grasslands director,  he helped organise international conferences, culminating in his key role as president of the XVII   Famed grassland scientist Ray Brougham dies.

International Grasslands Congress, held in New Zealand and Queensland last February. This event attracted more than 1500 grassland specialists from 91 countries and was hailed as by far the most successful grasslands conference,
 Dr Brougham was president of the New Zealand Grassland Association during 1969-1970 and was elected honorary member in 1978. He was chairman of Grassland Memorial Trust for 17 years and a trustee until his death. He was awarded an MBE in 1986 and received a New Zealand Commemorative Medal in 1990.
 AgResearch Grasslands general manager John Lancashire said Mr Brougham was dedicated to the city. "His great and strong character, coupled with his enthusiasm and vision for the world's grassland farming and its survival as a vital feature of this planet, made him friends all over the world, and his passing will be mourned in many countries".
 Dr Brougham is survived by his wife, June, and sons David, Michael and Mathew.
