-- Letter from Christoph Schröter, a researcher, trying to find Hanß Witte's birth:

"Dear Mr. Edwards
This is enough.
Sincerely yours,
C. Schröter"  =

"Dear Mr. Edwards
your request of 8 April, I can only partially answer.  Unfortunately, the marriage register for St. Nikola has a hole from 1608 to 1631.  So the marriage fo Hans Witte and the maiden name o f his wife can not be found.
There is a small light in this darkness.  After the death of Hans Witte (31 Aug 1636, plague year), his widow marries again.
The word-for-word entry:
Marriage register of St. Nikolai 1639 # 5, 23 Sep.
Henning Aße from Berßen in Braunschweig country/land, day laborer, and Margarethe, Hans Witte's surviving widow.
Berßen today is called Börssum.
Besides that, around 1600 in St. Nikolai, there was a citizen, Heinrich Witte.  He had a child baptized 28 Jun 1599, whose name is unfortunately not given.  Since, however, the names fo teh witnesses were written down, the name of the child can be determined:  Hans Behme, Lux (Lucas) Holdtwerdt, Lutike (Ludwig) Bredigers wife. -- The name of the child is probably Hnas, therefore, the person you are looking for.  In addition, a daughter, likewise with no name given, was also baptized on 22 Aug 1602.
Marriage and death of Heinrich Witte and his wife are not to be found.
Thank you for the payment of 80 DM.  This is enough.
Sincerely yours
C. Schröter"

Steve Blodgett, a good German researcher at the FHL, told me today that it is a very common practice for a child to be named after a witness, though it varies from area to area.  The researcher, Christoph Schröter was apparently quite sure that this was the correct person, and being familar with his own records, this seems more likely than not, SRE 2001?
-- Are there also wills or Nachlässe, Inventursprotokollen?  There are supposed to be at this archive Nachlässe, which used to be here 30 years ago, but probably all that has been taken to Magdeburg, SRE 26 Sep 2003.
-- Am in the Quedlinburg Stadtarchiv today.  I found in the "Häuser-Verzeichnis der Stadt Quedlinburg von 1637-1668", a typescript of house property sales from 1637-1668, no page numbering, arranged by street:

"Umb den Marckt... [2nd p.] Henricus Witte (p. 84 in original book). EinWohnhaus, eine Hufe Lehnacker vom Vater, so verteilt:  1/3 hewrrn Heinrich Witten itzo bei Baltazar Winecken, !/3 Samuel Schlütern, itzo Barthol. Schlütern. 1/3 Johann Bansen, itzo Christoph Bansen 1 Garten vom Mag. Absdorfen, davon 1/3 Herr Witten das andere Tönnies Hörning".  Not sure if this would be Heinrich the father of Hans, his son Heinrich (more likely), or perhaps even another relative.  No other Witte's mentioned in the typescript.
-- There's another typescript of the Schoßbuch of 1602.  After that, I'm going to the Schoßbücher themselves, which go from 1520 on up through 1620 (and later, but these are the ones I have at my desk). Witte's mentioned in typescript of 1602 Schoßbücher:  p. 1:  "Hans Wietten Witwe, 2 fl. (street, Hohenstrae)" -- p. 4, "Andreas Wiette, 2 fl. (street:  Zwischenden Dohren)" -- p. 4, "Valtin Witte kopf (20) (steet Vff der Worth)" -- p. 7, Heinrich Witte 3 fl. (Weberstraße) [it's a pure guess, but I think this is is Hans' dad.  He is taxed a bit more than the others and may have been older].  Nothing else for 1602.
-- Now checking the 1597 list.  Made it about ten pages into list, and didn't find any, but maybe I should make a bigger jump.  I could check this one again, but it would be last priority.  I think I had better start with the 1585 list, and then 1561-67, 1549, 1534, 1530-31, 35, 37, 38, and finally 1520, 24, 25, 29.  Then I can come back to 1597 list.  It is so close to 1602, which I just did, I don't think I'll be picking up many direct-line ancstors in that one.  So for 1585:
-- 1585:  p. 1, Hohenstrasse:  Hans Witte 3 fl. -- from the section "Neuenstedter (another town, or a class of people? -- s.o.  in archive informs me that they were part of Quedlinburg, but the Altstadt people were the merchants and the Neustadt people were more the farmers and were looked down on)", p. 34, we have Frantz Witten, 2 fl. -- Neustadt (under "Kinder der Augustiner), p. 34, Heinrich Witte 2.5 fl.
-- v. 1561-1567:  1561:  p. 3, Hans Witte 4 fl. (1561-3) -- p. 10b Franz Witte 1 fl. (der weiiertrassen andere teil?) -- 1562:  p. 22, Hans Witte 4 fl. -- p. 50b Hans Witte 5 (ort.?) -- p. 51 Claus Witten? 1 fl. -- p. 71b Franz Witte 1 ort 3 ... 1 ort 3 nicolaj enig? 3 helk? -- same p. Asmus Witte 1 fl. (both of last 2 ufm Kelbermargkte).  Going to jump back to 1549 now.
-- 1549:  p. 9, Hans Witte 33/gl ht. 3 Rjo 2 1/4 -- p. 28 Frantz Witte 1 fl or R.
-- 1534:  p. 13, ___ Witte iii fl.  First name looks like Heyn.  Compared handwriting and yes, it ends in ...eyn.  Now just need to verify first letter.  All his H's look different, but it still looks like an H or a T.  T would not be quite right.  I will leave it H for now -- p. 19b Josef Witten 1 fl. -- p. 21 Drens (looks pretty clear) 1 fl. -- p. 23b Hans Witten 4 fl?  Looked almost a bit like Wittze -- p. 27 b Asmis Witte 1 fl. -- Mathias Witte 1 fl. p. 40.
-- In the 1530-1538 Scho-register book, I am skipping, and rather goin g back to the 1520 book, which ocvers 1520, 24, 25, 29.  If I still have time (which I probably won't), I'll go into the 1530, 31, 35, 37, 38 book.
-- 1520, 24, 25, 29:  1520:  nothing (that I could read at least) -- 1524:  nothing.
-- A historian in the Quedlinburg Stadtarchiv told me that an archive in Magdeburg would have tons of stuff, the Landesarchiv.  Also one in Oranienburg in the pre-Prussian? time, and one in Berlin.  Also, there would be one in Dresden of the Saxon time -- SRE 26 Sep 2003.

LOG/NOTES:
-- Bürgerbücher start too early for this person.  Did a search for Witte in Bürgerbücher 1658-1850 (for Quelinburg).  On FHL 1633136, searched beginning to 1662 (frame 66).  Found only one entry for a Witte.  I don't imagine it could be one of our relatives, as ours are from Wittenberg, and the one found was from Mooßbach:  "Den 5 Juny ist Hanß Wittig außen Vogtlander von Mooßbach...1659 (frame 19).
-- Checked also Kirchen- und Reformations-Historie des Käyserlichen Freyen neltlichen Stifts Quelinburg on FHL 1187363:2 and 1187364:1.  Doesn't look like it would help us.  Focuses mainly on royalty, but could check later as a last resort.  Title looks wrong, but then other things w/rec. also wrong.  Didn't find index mentioned.  There is an index of sorts, but not in actuality, apparently.  Since it is filmed "with" other things, it is possible I just didn't check carefully enough.  Possibly check later, though not best source -- 15 Nov 2001.

-- Sent letter to Quedlinburg Stadt- and Kreisarchiv.  Both sent me back nice replies, but unfortunately, neither one of them had reocrds from before time I need:  From the Kreisarchiv "Sehr geehrter Herr Edwards, ich habe Ihre Anfrage vom 16.06.2003 am 30.06.2003 erhalten und möchten mich für Ihr Interesse bedanken. Wegner, Mitarbeiterin, Kreisarchiv."

From the Stadtarchiv (phone:  49-3946-905-50; FAX:  49-3946-905-95-00; e-mail:  stadt-quedlinburg@t-online.de; www:  www.quedlinburg.de. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, I. Fischer (Im Auftrag)."

In the former, there is a Bürgermeiester Hans Witte, 2. Mittel, Quedlinburg Altstadt.  In the latter source, the same person is mentioned again on p. ?, only by last name.  On p. 123, a Witte is mentioned (who was "Syndikus zu Wernigerode").  This is quite a shot in the dark that we could be related to him directly, but probably are in some way.  Disconnect after cleared -- SRE, 28 Jul 2003.
-- I checked with Larry Jensen at work the day before I left for my trip.  He said I should check the Minerva handbook of German archives.  I did so, and what I found was very interesting.  Though the city archive at Quedlinburg said they had no pre-1600 information that would be genealogically relevant, they actually have lists of inhabitants and censuses going back through 1480.  So I set up an appointment and will go see them on 26 Sep., 25 Sep 2003, SRE.
-- They do only have Schoßbücher (tax lists) and a house list (sales) from mid- to late-1600's.  The wills and other legal stuff is probably in Magdeburg, SRE 26 Sep 2003.

Mrs. Heinrich WITTE 1 was born about 1577 in of, St. Nikolai, Quedlinburg, Sachsen, Deutschland. She died about 1637 in of, St. Nikolai, Quedlinburg, Sachsen, Deutschland. Mrs. married Heinrich WITTE about 1598 in of, St. Nikolai, Quedlinburg, Sachsen, Deutschland.

NOTE:  FOR THE THREE OTHER POSSIBLE CHILDREN THAT THESE NOTES, IN PART, REFER TO, SEE MISC.PAF DATABASE.

There is trouble here.  It appears there are children to Joseph Kögl and 1) Theresia 1723, 2) Anna Maria 1728 (1 and 2 Joseph is from Blettingsdorf), 3) Rosina 1729 (of whom we know for sure that Matthias and Bartholomew are descended from) (Joseph is from Doltsdorf here), and 4) Catharina 1733 (Holzenhof auf der Pr...hang/Pramberg).  Are there three different ones, did he marry multiple times, or are these supposed wives godparents and witnesses?  Checked.  Almost zilch chance they are witnesses.  Another interesting conflicting point:  In the marriage records of Bartholomew and Matthias (probably they are the same people as the B. and M. who are children of Joseph), Matthias' mother and father are listed as Joseph and Rosina KÖGL. Bart's parents are listed as Joseph and Theresia KÖGL.  Admittedly, when Bart was married, his mother could have been dead, and a stepmother listed, but Theresia was mother to children with Joseph BEFORE Bart's birth.  Could just be a mix-up of the priest, but it just adds one other complication:  Is the Bart who got married to Maria Anna STEINKELLNER (and where his father is Joseph and mother is listed as Theresia) the same the one who was born to Joseph and Rosina?
-- Searched for marriage for him in Böheimkirchen, from 1673-1738, and didn't find any with the Kögl surname at all, SRE, 9 Sep 2003.
