She and her elder brother  Robert Archibald Claude or "Boy" as he was known   (writer's father) were born in Motueka not Lower Moutere The family shifted to Lower Moutere when she was about 7 or 8 yrs old.
Her mother was Rose Etta (nee Goodman) who was also the youngest of nine children raised by her mother Elizabeth (neeTalbot ).as her father had died of pnuemonia after working in cold and wet weather. He had dragged himself home and collapsed and almost died at the front gate. Maisies mother Rose Etta known as "Dolly" was also a woman who suffered from ill health all her life and one has to wonder how she ever raised 12 children!
Maisies' grand uncle  Graham Brougham was one of the largest landowners in the district raising crops hops tobacco and sheep in various areas.
In Motueka he owned all the land from the Swan Hotel to Burnetts and back to the saleyards. All the Broughams were business people.
She remembered when then the Jubilee bridge collapsed after an army truck hit the overhead support structure.
A John Arnolds wife's parents bought all the land from James Alexander Brougham for $99 an acre.
