YORK, Nita Louisa

My father known to everyone as Bob or among his family as 'Boy"was born in Motueka in 1908 and was the eldest of twelve children. He grew up and left home just as some of his younger siblings were born. He attended school at Lower Moutere as all his forebears had done, and later left to work on the Brougham properties. He met and married Ella Wipiiti on the 15 May 1929.
Two daughters were born. June, and Janet.
He left home and worked in a marble quarry on Marble Mountain in the Golden Bay area. Later he worked as a tunneller on the Cobb River hydro dam project, before going to work as a tunneller on the railway line around the Kaikoura coast. The family lived at a temporary township at a location known then as"Aniseed".A book titled Public Works Camps "Poor kids'Paradise' written by Pauline Blincoe gives a factual account of those days.
It was here that the writer Richard ( Dick) was born on the 30 Sept 1939.
Just at the start of World War 11 the family was tranferred to the Karapiro Hydro project in 1940, just when the next son Robert was born.
RAC Brougham did service in the 9th Coast Regiment as Sergeant Engineer in the Bomb Disposal Group.
As typical of wars toll on marriages, he divorced he remarried Nita Louisa Yorke.
On returning to public life he joined the P W D again at the Waikato project town of Mangakino.
The family shifted again to Kaitangata on his promotion to Mine manager at the Government opencast coal mine at Wangaloa (South Otago).
A short stint also at Lauthala Bay in Fiji in charge of the building of the breakwater for the Sunderland flying boats.
In 1955 Bob moved to Auckland as Senior Overseer on the construction of the first piece of the Southern Motorway, from Penrose to Redoubt Road.
A final shift was to the Napier residency as Inspector of Works, where for 11 years he was heavily involved with the reconstruction of the Napier - Taupo highway.
He purchased a property in Puketapu Road where he and Nita had gardens growing fruit and vegetables for market as a hobby. He devored much of his time in later years to Napier Senior Citizens Association and was President from 1972 until his death in 1988.
He was also an active member of the Taradale RSA.
